Botanic Gardens Cycad Collection Wedding – Joanne & Blake

    Botanic Gardens Cycad Collection Wedding

Joanne and Blake held their wedding ceremony at the Cycad Collection area, which is one of the many wedding ceremony locations available within the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

The weather was fantastic and the smiles on everyone’s face made for the most wonderful atmosphere for this lovely couple’s simple wedding celebration!

Cycad Collection Wedding Ceremony

After a little bit of a wait due to the unfortunate parking situation causing Joanne to be a little late – Joanne and Blake’s wedding ceremony took place under the shade provided by the large gum tree at the foot of their Cycad collection wedding location. It’s not often that shade is there due to the orientation of the spot, but as their ceremony was quite early in the day, this space was perfect!

Music was provided by a nifty two man strings band which played music before and after their ceremony. Joanne and Blake really seemed to enjoy their presence and they were good enough sports to join in for a bit of a fun photo at the end of their group photos.

Joanne and Blake’s Cycad collection wedding ceremony was presided over by a family member – who happend to also be a celebrant, which was lovely as it made for the while ceremony to be that much more intimate, it was lovely to see the celebrant herself tear up!

Their ceremony also included a number of different people who stepped up to recite a bit of a reading, and their little page boy kept stealing the show by shyly joining in at random moments – including a blended family sand ceremony, which is nice to see.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens Glamour Photos

After the group family photos, and saying goodbye to the string band, we went on a little bit of a whirlwind tour of the Botanic Gardens before returning to the National Wine Center for a lunch time reception.

We began right near the Cycad collection area, and snaked our way north, through the heritage listed green house, the famed elm walk way right up through the friendship gates to make use of the trees in Botanic park – and back again.

We moved quick in order to make use of all the spots in the Botanic Gardens I knew would work in this light, and also to get back to the wine center on time.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens Wedding – Dolores & Mauro

    Adelaide Botanic Gardens Wedding

    The Elm walk

I was lucky enough to be chosen as the wedding photographer at Dolores and Mauro’s Adelaide Botanic Gardens wedding in October this year. The weather was absolutely sublime considering the lead up was less than fine. In fact at a meeting with Dolores on the Tuesday prior to the wedding, it was raining the entire time! Despite a minor setback in the morning with Dolores running back to her hotel before the ceremony for some forgotten items, the day went beautifully, culminating with their reception at the Adelaide Wine Center.

Preparation photos

I started the day, as I often do at the place of preparation of the groom and his family. The magnificent house Mauro was being prepared in was in Wattle Park, East of the city. He was joined by his best man, and relatives including a trio of sharp looking kids, one of which was apparently not feeling very well. Mauro was quite calm and collected, despite breaking the stem of one of his flowers and had the attitude of ‘what happens happens’. The house provided some wonderful vantage points for some stunning preparation shots so I made good use if it.

Dolores was being prepared in a less roomy hotel room at the Majestic Roof Garden Hotel. She was joined by quite a few people causing the small room to feel quite cramped. Her little boy was a bit of a camera hog, so many of the photos I took there had him in it!

Adelaide Botanic Gardens Wedding Ceremony

It had been a while since I covered a wedding at the Adelaide botanic gardens. The last being in April, 2014. But the Adelaide Botanic Gardens are such a wonderful place to shoot a wedding, the time just flew by as we wandered about using the amazing scenery the area provides.

From the very first sketches for the plan of Adelaide city, colonel light always intended for Adelaide to have a ‘botanical gardens‘ and are therefore some of the best planned and laid out versions of the concept anywhere.  However, it wasn’t until 1854, after a public appeal to the Governor, Sir Henry Young that gardens were established at the current location. They were officially opened in 1857. Amongst many scientific and educational displays of various fauna, the gardens hold one of the earliest propagated specimens of the Wollemi Pine tree, which was discovered as recently as 1994.

As a wedding venue, the Adelaide Botanic Gardens provides room for at least 3 weddings to be held simultaneously and boasts some of the most stereotypically stunning Adelaide wedding photography locations.

We are so lucky to live in a city like Adelaide with sprawling botanic gardens such as these, as a wedding photographer, one cannot ask for a more diverse location for natural scenery than what’s provided right in the heart of the city. From hundred year old elm trees, toi weeping willows, and even wetlands and ultramodern architecture. The timing of our lap around the gardens was well timed too, as the sun was just going down for a marvellous finale to the day.

National Wine Center Wedding Reception

The National wine center is a stunning modern function center built right next door to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens so it provided the most convenient of locations for Dolores and Mauro’s reception.

Opened in 2001, the Wine center contains an exhibition of winemaking, introducing visitors to the technology, varieties and styles of wine. It also has a wine tasting area, giving visitors the opportunity to taste and compare wines from different areas of Australia.

Dolores and Mauro’s reception took place in the Wine function hall, suitable for up to 120 guests. The room overlooked the wine center’s courtyard and had easy access to the end of the Botanic Gardens. A beautiful setting to round off a beautiful day.

Adelaide Botanic Garden Wedding – Jackie & David

    Adelaide Botanic Garden Wedding

    Walking through the bush

Jackie and David’s wedding was blessed with beautiful weather throughout their ceremony and when backed by the wonderful scenery of the Adelaide Botanic Garden, it made for a wedding that was an absolute joy to be a wedding photographer at! Jackie and David were particularly lucky with the weather due to the crazy Adelaide weather we were experiencing throughout January, but it turned out absolutely perfect for them. I was actually called up the day before to cover this wedding, so I was very pleased to have had no other booking on their day to photograph them!

Preparation

As Jackie and David opted to take advantage of my flexible hourly-based wedding photography package, I was asked to cover about an hour of Jackie’s preparation at a home just outside the city. The time was mostly spent running after the children and getting them ready, and then having the dress put on just before we were due to leave for the Botanic Garden.

Adelaide Botanic Garden Wedding Ceremony

Jackie and David’s wedding ceremony took place on a grassy hill overlooking the central Botanic Garden cafe and adjacent lake. The bridal party were protected from the harsh sun somewhat by a shadow cast by a nearby gum tree, which was good otherwise they would have struggled with the heat. It was the first time I had photographed a wedding taking place at this location within the Botanic Garden, with previous weddings I’ve covered taking place closer to the north terrace entrance. This area provided for a far nicer backdrop however and looked lovely.

Directly after the ceremony, and the group photos the bridal party and I walked around the botanic garden for around an hour to take some glamour photos. As the sun was quite low in the sky, I was particularly focused on using the incredible foliage the gardens provide to incorporate some sun flares into their wedding photos.

Ayer’s House Wedding Reception

Jackie and David’s wedding reception took place just across the road from the Botanic Garden at Ayer’s House, a stately reception venue which once housed the family of one of South Australia’s most successful politicians; Sir Henry Ayers. Today the house serves as a wedding and function center.
