Plan Your LGBTQI+ Wedding – Questions to Ask

Steps to Plan Your LGBTQI+ Wedding

If you have stumbled onto this blog post, then congratulations on getting engaged! Planning a same-sex wedding may be time-consuming and tedious—as well as exciting, don’t get us wrong—and it is important to make sure that you have everything figured out before the big day. One of these essential tasks is finding the right photographer to help you plan your LGBTQI+ wedding.

Since a LGBTQ+ wedding may not be exactly the same as a heterosexual one, there may be some considerations you need to think about before agreeing to hire a specific photographer. When it comes to taking pictures with your partner, you want to make sure that you are able to find a photographer that has experience approaching your wedding the way you would like.

Questions to Ask the Photographer when you plan your LGBTQI+ wedding

Here are a few questions that you may want to ask the photographer you are thinking about working with.

1 – Have you ever worked with a LGBTQI+ couple before?

It is important for you to ask this question. A photographer who has already had working experience with an LGBTQI+ couple will have an idea of what you may be interested in when it comes to the pictures on your wedding day.

However, take note that you should never totally dismiss a photographer from the onset just because they do not have experience photographing a same sex wedding yet! It just may make things a little easier to educate them on what you expect and any social faux pas to avoid.

2 – What is your photography style?

Look into their individual style. Great photographers will be able to capture the emotions that are present in each moment. Many photographers are able to have various photography skills that may stretch across different styles to help you negotiate with them as to what type of style you want them to use for your wedding pictures.

3 – May we see some of your samples?

It is incredibly important for you to ask for samples of past work and projects that they have worked on in the past. These samples may be able to give you an idea about what style they have. Not only samples too – try to view a full album of what they have presented to past clients – hopefully similar to the wedding you are planning for yourselves.

When it comes to wedding pictures, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What your friend or family member may consider to be a beautiful picture may not be exactly what you envisioned! Looking at a photographer’s samples will help you decide if their output is within your preference.

4 – Is there any family drama that may rear it’s ugly head?

It’s an unfortunate fact that when you plan your LGBTQI+ wedding it can bring out the ugly side of certain family members. If you know of any such issues perhaps take certain steps to avoid these personal issues from impacting on your day, and let your photographer know.

When you plan your LGBTQI+ wedding, while it may be hard try not to invite guests you know don’t agree with your choices, or if unavoidable be sure to let them know they are loved so they can show the same.

It’s a tricky issue but thankfully society has finally come around to the idea of LGBTQI+ weddings abut there may still be some closet troglodytes around.

5 – All the other usual questions you might ask a wedding photographer

Your wedding is still a wedding, even if you plan your lgbtqi+ wedding, plenty of questions will be the same as a hetero wedding. Question about insurance, turn around time, how you will receive your photos, etc. I’ve written about this in depth in past blogs here.

Adelaide’s Pilgrim Uniting Church Wedding – Jesse & Luke

    Pilgrim Uniting Church Wedding

First dance with fireworks at Adelaide Hilton Hotel

I was very much looking forward to covering Jesse and Luke’s Pilgrim Uniting Church Wedding from the moment they asked me to be their wedding photographer, and my excitement was well founded – what a celebration it was!

So much so that I know it’s hard to show while reading this blog but I’ve been sitting here staring at my screen thinking about what next to write. Jesse and Luke were surrounded their entire day with loving family and friends who just made their day that much better – let alone the incredible celebration they had planned that night!

Preparation

Jesse and Luke were prepared in separate rooms at the Hilton Hotel, in sight of the Pilgrim Uniting church across Victoria Square in the center of the Adelaide CBD. This was great as I was able to flit inbetween their rooms while they were being prepared – if things weren’t progressing in one room, then I’d head over to the other, and visa versa until it was time to leave for the ceremony.

Both Jesse and Luke were prepared with their parents and their entourage which made the whole time kind of hectic, but also quite a bit of fun trying to get everything ready to go.

Pilgrim Uniting Church Wedding Ceremony

Jesse and Luke’s Adelaide Pilgrim Uniting Church wedding ceremony was quite an impressive sight with it’s albiet dark, but impressive architecture inside. Jesse and Luke also had a chior singing below the church’s impressive organ which made for a beautiful atmosphere!

Both Jesse and Luke were walked down the aisle separately with their mothers after their fathers had lit ornamental candles on the church’s altar which I thought really helped bring both families togetheras part of their ceremony involved Jesse and Luke sharing the flames into one candle.

The weather wasn’t the best all day, so we were quite lucky to be able to have the entire congragation out on the church’s steps for a group photo before heading back inside for smaller group photos.

Once they were done, we used the stunning interior of the church for a few shots with their entourage, while also waling around the church a bit to use it’s wonderful architecture. As the weather wasn’t great I was delighted to see that the church had turned on it’s outside lighting earlier than usual, so we got an awesome glow coming out of the archways at the front – was fun to use.

We then sped over to the Adelaide Railway station for a few photos, while dodging all the Crows fans who were walking through to get to Adelaide Oval at the same time.

Finally during the reception, and in the rain we head out to Victoria square to use the pretty lighting thats set up!

Adelaide Hilton Wedding Reception

Jesse and Luke’s wedding reception at the Hilton was certainly one to remember! Huge chandeliers framed the gigantic cake they had set up in front of the head table, fireworks flamed into life during Jesse and Luke’s entrance and first dance, and to top it all off a 19 piece band was playing all night as entertainment! In their own words their wedding theme was ‘gaudy’!

What made me crack up was a quip from Jesse that even the cake wasn’t straight – and indeed it wasnt, as it was leaning offto one side due to it’s enormous size!

Their whole night was full of plenty of drinking, fun and dancing, culminating in the throwing of bears that held a likeness to Jesse and Luke in liew of any bouquet toss.

It had been a little while since covering a same sex wedding, so covering Jesse and Luke’s Pilgrim Uniting Church wedding was awesome to be a part of, particularly at the beginning of pride month! Thankyou for having me and I hope you enjoy your photos!
