Light Painting Wedding Photography

June 25, 2015/in ideas, Interesting, Wedding

As is often the case when I sit down with new wedding photography clients I often receive gasps of adoration when I show some of the light painting shots I can take when it starts to get dark. Usually I’m only able to do this when I’m commissioned to cover a full day wedding using my hugely flexible daily coverage option due to the fact it doesn’t usually get dark in Adelaide until the time when most people are starting their wedding reception. As a result, I’m more often than not getting requests from clients to recreate some of these shots I’ve been producing at previous weddings.

The Process usually involves myself with a tripod setting up a long exposure of a scene involving the newly wedded couple. The couple needs to stay stock still, or as close to it as possible for 30-60 seconds while friends of theirs, usually groomsmen, run around them with either torches, sparklers or my camera’s strobe lights to ‘paint’ in light to create a ‘light painting’ image. ‘Painting’ with light comes from the idea that photography as an artform is the act of capturing light as it’s presented on some sort of photo sensitive medium. In today’s case it’s usually a digital sensor. The ‘painting’ aspect comes into it when you are directly responsible for some of the light that reaches this photosensitive medium, such as having someone run around with a light source, thereby ‘painting’ with the light they create while running around.

Light Painting Wedding Photography

The following are a collection of Light Painting Wedding Photographs I have captured over the last few years. The locations range from beaches to waterfalls and zoos. Wherever it gets dark I’m able to put on my light painting hat and produce some magical photographs for your wedding album.

Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron Wedding – Deb & Ben

June 14, 2015/in Wedding, Wedding preview

Deborah and Ben held their wedding in the grassy area next to the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron clubrooms in Outer Harbour, Adelaide. The day was really sunny but not too hot for all involved and the entire day went pretty much according to plan. Deb and Ben opted to take advantage of my very flexible full day coverage as their wedding photographer and I had a ball of a time, with friendly accommodating guests that were easy to work with I had no problem staying right to the end of their reception a little after midnight despite heading off to China at 4am the next morning.

Groomsmen Preparation

Ben and his groomsmen were getting ready near by to the Yacht Squadron, in a house just off the foreshore. So after getting dressed, and the usual problems grooms have while getting ready, we headed off down to the beach for a few shots.

Bridal party preparation

As with the groomsmen, the bridal party were getting ready nearby, but in a room of the Lakes Resort, overlooking the West Lakes Boating Lake. Quite a squeezy affair having 5 ladies getting prepared in a room suited for two, along with make up artists and myself. but we got there.

Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron Wedding Ceremony

The RSAYS, with their website here has quite the colourful history in South Australia, having been established in 1881, they have been present in one form or another around the Port river and Outer harbour since. With humble beginnings in a tin shed, the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron now boasts fully redeveloped clubrooms and reception facilities overlooking the yacht marina. The day itself, as I said before was a very sunny day, thankfully Deb and Ben had placed large umbrellas over the area where they were standing or they would have been very warm, very quick.

Semaphore Beach Wedding Photos

Directly after their ceremony, we head off to the Semaphore Beach Esplanade where we made use of the setting sun to capture some majestic images of Deb and Ben in such wonderful light.

Wedding Reception

We then head back to the marina to enjoy the newly renovated reception hall which I have had the priviledge to visit twice now in quick succession. It’s a lovely place at night with the balcony overlooking the bobbing yachts and a huge area inside for mingling and dancing.

Stangate House Wedding – Tessa & Robbie

June 1, 2015/in Wedding, Wedding preview

Tessa and Robbie’s beautiful wedding took place on the 21st of March. However, due to the absolute beauty of the setting at Stangate House and Tessa’s personal touches around the venue I have only just finished editing them, just wanted to do the wedding justice! The House in Stirling is a stunning venue to behold. The weather was perfect too, which was good as the entire wedding and sit-down reception took place outside with no backup plan except for a marquee that was not erected due to part of the grounds being off limits to visitors! Tessa and Robbie’s bubbly personality and welcoming demeanour made the entire day to be a blast for myself and my additional photographer which they opted to take advantage of on top of my wedding photography daily rate.

Groomsmen Preparation

Robbie, I soon found out when I arrived at his place of preparation in Morphettville is quite a character, quite keen on jumping about and having a bit of fun with his wedding preparation photos, along with his grooms men. The boys got ready quite quickly with enabled me to walk about the area a bit taking advantage of the surrounding park and Robbie’s parent’s house’s backyard.

Bridal Party preparation

Tessa’s bridal party got prepared at the house itself as other than a few outside purchases, such as myself as the wedding photographer and the venue itself, most if not all of the day was overseen by Tessa herself, right down to decoration their wedding cake a few minutes before heading down the aisle.

Stangate House Wedding Ceremony

The house is in the heart of Aldgate. Designed by Adelaide architect Eric McMichael, the 1940’s house is set in four acres and overlooks one of the most beautiful camellia gardens in Australia. Built in 1940, the design was commissioned in England and is now in the hands of National Trust of South Australia, managed by the Mount Lofty branch.

The gardens at Stangate House are perfect for strolling around, particularly for a wedding. The soft light that the overhanging foliage of the giant trees create on a very sunny day such as this one can be quite magical. This coupled with the eagerness of the bridal party to have a bit of fun with their photos created amazing opportunities for some stunning photos.

Reception

Tessa and Robbie’s wedding was unique in that for the entire day, all participants, guests and members of the bridal party stayed in the gardens from preparation through to reception with the guests enjoying a bit of a home made picnic area put together by Tessa and her bridal party. The amount of effort put into personalising the rustic details of the day was phenomenal and I’m sure something that will stay in the hearts and minds of all her guests that day. The following photos show both the lead up and the actual reception.
