2021 A year in Review

Whelp we all thought we had seen it all with 2020 diddn’t we? 2021 surely couldnt be worse? In many ways it was but in others not as bad. It’s actually turned out to be a rather hectic year for me at SvenStudios! I covered 37 weddings this year – up from the 25 that I covered during the COVID ravaged 2020, but still due to the lack of jobkeeper – there was a period of time in the middle of year that things got to be fairly tight as couples were still cancelling or postponging weddings due to restrictions on dancing or travel from interstate.

Alls well that ends well though I suppose – these last few months have been quite hectic – which is quite similar to what happened at the end of 2020 with everyone postponing to about the same time as everyone else. I just hope that 2022 won’t be the godzilla on the funny meme I’ve posted 🙂

Booked 2022 Weddings

I covered 37 weddings this year – which in of itself is not unsual, in fact it looks to be back to normal for me over the past eyar with one small exception – that many of them I was acting as the videographer! Wedding videography is something new to me that I’ve quite enjoyed and fallen into due to my habit of producing a small video for every wedding I cover anyway! It was a natural profrssion that people would start to ask just for videography.

Live streaming has also been quite a popular item requested of me this year – for obvious reasons. Unfortunately the service is never foolproof due to the wonderful mobile network we have in Australia – and the weather isnt great sometimes! But it’s quite a neat little service I now offer for free at any wedding I’ve covering. Same goes for my 360 degree virtual reality recording which has also been super popular this year!

A huge change in how I work has actually been with my equipment – I now use what’s called a ‘medium format’ camera – which is simply described as a camera system that’s ‘better’ than what most professionals use. Those of you old enough to remember film might recognise the term ‘medium format’ and realise what it means. Without going into much more detail just know that it’s takening my photography to the next level. Some might say it’s a bit of overkill for wedding photography, but I’m enjoying it 🙂

25 booked weddings for 2022 so far, so it’s looking to be another busy year! I’m looking forward to expanding a bit, bringing on staff to help me out a bit with the editing and as extra hands on a weddings day so watch this space!

This year at the 2021 ABIA Awards, I was once again a finalist in two categories, that would be wedding photographer of the year and wedding videographer of the year. I missed out on photobooth supplier of the year as I qualified for last year, but I feel as though that’s mainly due to not having had it booked out as much as I had in 2020.

I’d usually have won some awards with the AIPP – however unfortunately the institute for professional photographers in Australia folded during 2021 – much in the same way many professional organisations have – partly due to the effects of COVID, but also simply the way the world is now. It’s a bit of a sad thing to happen as the AIPP has played a huge role in shaping my career as a professional photographer!

Here’s hoping 2022 will be smooth sailing in regards to any infectous diseases and hopefully I can get back to shooting some overseas weddings! Looking out early in the new year for the annual ‘wedding photo of the year’ contest which will begin just as soon as I finish the editing on all the weddings I have covered in 2021. As of writing this I have 7 still do go!

Merry Christmas and have a happy new year everybody!
