The drive up to the church felt like moving deeper into the Hills, with tall trees closing in and the temperature dropping slightly as clouds rolled through. The Crafers Church of the Epiphany sits right along the highway, yet somehow feels completely removed from it. Surrounded by nature and framed by history, it’s a charming little building that instantly sets the tone for a meaningful ceremony.
Inside, the church is beautifully moody. Dark timber, stone textures, and filtered light create an atmosphere that feels reverent and grounded. From the church, we headed over to Hans Heysen House, The Cedars, one of my favourite locations in the Adelaide Hills for wedding photography. As the former home of one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, the gardens here feel purposeful and inspired. Every path, tree, and open space carries a sense of intention, shaped by the landscapes that influenced Heysen’s work.
Walking through the gardens with Clare and Ryan felt unhurried and playful. The rain held off just long enough for us to explore, using the layered greenery and open lawns for elegant, relaxed portraits. Clare and Ryan’s new shared surname, Champion, sparked a moment of light-hearted fun when they brought out a little trophy prop. Those playful photos captured their sense of humour perfectly, adding a personal touch to an already beautiful setting. Just as we wrapped up, the rain finally settled in, leaving us with a few atmospheric droplets that added mood without slowing us down.

With the rain properly arriving, we made a quick dash to the Grunthal wedding reception in Hahndorf. The warmth inside was instantly welcoming, a perfect contrast to the damp afternoon outside. The space buzzed with conversation and laughter as guests settled in, coats shrugged off and glasses raised.
The reception unfolded with heartfelt speeches that had everyone laughing one minute and wiping away tears the next. The food was a highlight, generous and beautifully presented, adding to the relaxed, celebratory feel of the evening. One unexpected moment stole the show when I noticed a fancy-dress gathering happening next door. Among the crowd was a guest dressed as Batman, which was far too good to ignore. An invitation was extended, and suddenly Batman was part of Clare and Ryan’s wedding story, proving once again that the best moments often come unplanned.
