Capella Wedding Photography – Caitlin & Adam’s Farm Wedding
Caitlin and Adam’s gorgeous country celebration gave me the perfect excuse to pack my camera gear and head north for a little Central Queensland adventure. Their private farm wedding took place just outside Capella, around 30 minutes north of Emerald, surrounded by open paddocks, towering gum trees and the unmistakable charm of rural Australia. As an Adelaide-based wedding photographer, travelling interstate for a day like this is always exciting. New scenery, wonderful people and a completely different landscape make the creative part of my brain very happy!
I stayed in Emerald while I was in the region and made the most of my time there by doing a little sightseeing between wedding commitments. That included trying my hand at fossicking for gemstones, because it would have felt wrong to visit the famous Central Queensland gemfields without searching for something sparkly. I may be better at finding lovely light than valuable sapphires, but it was still a fun way to experience this unique part of Queensland.
A Capella wedding offers something beautifully different from a traditional city celebration. There is space to breathe, scenery stretching all the way to the horizon and a relaxed atmosphere that immediately puts everyone at ease. Caitlin and Adam’s private farm provided all of that, along with vintage vehicles, tractors, long grass, friendly chickens and a huge gum tree that looked as though it had been waiting years to become a wedding ceremony backdrop.
Their day felt genuine from beginning to end. It was cheerful, emotional and wonderfully unpretentious, with friends and family contributing to every part of the celebration. The setting was spectacular without needing to be polished or overly styled. Everything belonged exactly where it was, and that authenticity gave their Capella wedding photography so much personality.
Adam’s Preparation
The morning began at the farm, where Adam and the boys were enjoying a particularly easygoing start to the day. When I arrived, they were wandering around with the slightly uncertain air of men who knew there was a wedding happening but had not yet been told what they were supposed to do. A gentle suggestion that they might like to start getting dressed was enough to set everything into motion.
There was no frantic schedule or crowded hotel room to contend with. The boys had the freedom of the property, plenty of fresh country air and a few beverages decorated with a generous number of Xs. Their rural hats naturally became part of the look, adding exactly the kind of personal touch I love to photograph. Those details said far more about Adam and his mates than a perfectly arranged collection of matching accessories ever could.
Preparations on a farm have their own wonderful rhythm. People drift between the house, shed and paddocks while conversations carry on as though it is an ordinary weekend gathering. The difference is that everyone happens to be dressed exceptionally well. Adam looked completely at home among the familiar surroundings, and that comfort came through in the photographs.
Once the shirts were buttoned, ties straightened and hats positioned, we had a little time for relaxed portraits around the property. There was plenty of laughter, a bit of good-natured carrying on and no shortage of country character. Adam’s preparation photos captured the calm before the ceremony while still feeling lively, natural and unmistakably him.
Caitlin’s Preparation
Caitlin’s morning had a slightly more dramatic beginning. Only the day before the wedding, she discovered that the hotel she had booked had lost her reservation. That is hardly the surprise any bride wants immediately before getting married, especially while pregnant and surrounded by all the usual activity of a wedding weekend!
The warmth of the local community quickly came to the rescue. A replacement hotel was found, giving Caitlin and the girls a comfortable place to prepare without the missing booking derailing the celebration. It was a lovely example of the close-knit spirit found around Capella and Emerald. When something went wrong, people stepped in and made sure the wedding could continue just as it should.
There were little babies everywhere, plenty of excitement in the room and a gorgeous mum-to-be at the centre of it all. We leaned into the occasion by creating a few photographs with a playful maternity-session flavour. Some were sweet, others were delightfully silly, and a few involved tiny feet resting on bellies. Those particular images can remain a private treasure for Caitlin, Adam and their family rather than appearing here!
Despite the last-minute accommodation scramble, Caitlin looked radiant. The room filled with cheerful conversation as hair and makeup came together, dresses were arranged and all the final details found their places. Photographing her preparation was less about staging a perfect bridal scene and more about preserving the affectionate, funny and slightly chaotic energy shared by everyone there.
Private Farm in Capella Wedding Ceremony
The ceremony took place beneath an enormous gum tree on the property. Its broad branches created a beautiful natural frame around Caitlin and Adam, while the surrounding paddocks gave their guests an uninterrupted view of the Queensland countryside. For a photographer, it was the sort of ceremony setting that offered character from every direction.
Caitlin arrived in a fabulous vintage car, introducing another wonderful piece of country charm to the day. She walked down the aisle flanked by her dad, with the old gum tree waiting behind Adam at the other end. That entrance felt elegant without being overly formal, perfectly matching the relaxed spirit of their private farm wedding.
The sun played hide-and-seek with the clouds throughout the ceremony. One minute the landscape was covered in soft, even light; the next, everything glowed under the bright Queensland sunshine. Changing conditions can keep a wedding photographer alert, but they also create lovely variation. The shifting light gave the ceremony gallery a mixture of gentle moments and vibrant country colour.
Caitlin and Adam’s vows were heartfelt and wonderful to hear. There is something especially endearing about seeing the rough-and-ready outback types become emotional when someone they care about is getting married. A few tough exteriors softened, happy tears appeared and broad smiles quickly followed. Those honest reactions are always among my favourite things to photograph.
The ceremony never felt detached from the farm around it. Birds continued calling, leaves stirred overhead and the countryside carried on as usual while two people made an enormous promise beneath an old tree. It was intimate, meaningful and absolutely suited to Caitlin and Adam.
Glamour Photos
After the ceremony, we explored the property for Caitlin and Adam’s wedding portraits. The long driveway leading towards the farmstead became one of our main locations, offering gorgeous leading lines and a distinctly rural backdrop. It was an ideal place to include their vintage car while allowing the scenery to remain an important part of each composition.
Farm machinery also made a well-deserved appearance. Tractors may not feature in every wedding photography gallery, but at a private farm wedding in Capella, they belong in the story. Rather than trying to disguise the working nature of the property, we celebrated it. These familiar pieces of farm life gave the photographs a sense of place that could never have been recreated at a conventional venue.
As the afternoon faded, the light became warmer and softer. We headed into the long grass while the sun lowered towards the horizon, creating some spectacular sunset portraits. Caitlin and Adam stood together against a glowing Central Queensland sky as the landscape turned golden around them. It was romantic, dramatic and effortlessly beautiful.
The open countryside gave us plenty of freedom to play with wide compositions that showed the scale of the property. My photography has always been strongly inspired by landscapes, so combining a newly married couple with an expansive rural sunset was an absolute treat. Caitlin and Adam were brilliant company throughout, happily stepping into the grass and trusting me whenever I spotted another patch of lovely light.
Their portraits never needed stiff poses or elaborate setups. A little movement, a shared laugh and the occasional quiet moment were all we needed. The finished photographs carry the warmth of the sunset, the personality of the farm and the connection between two people thoroughly enjoying their first afternoon as husband and wife.
Private Farm in Capella Wedding Reception
The reception celebrations were spread across two purpose-built spaces on the property. Caitlin and Adam shared their first dance inside a large marquee, which had also been prepared as a backup ceremony location in case the weather turned. Thankfully, the day remained beautiful, allowing the outdoor ceremony beneath the gum tree to go ahead exactly as planned.
The marquee created a lovely setting for that first dance. With friends and family gathered around, Caitlin and Adam had their moment together before the evening became even livelier. There was no need for an elaborate ballroom or heavily decorated venue. The significance came from the people surrounding them and the excitement of seeing the newlyweds take to the dance floor.
A large farm shed hosted the sit-down dinner, transforming a practical rural space into a warm and welcoming Capella wedding reception. Long conversations, generous meals and laughter filled the room as everyone settled in for the evening. The combination of a marquee, working shed and open farm setting made the celebration feel completely personal to Caitlin and Adam.
Speeches were opened to anyone who wanted to say a few words, bringing an extra layer of spontaneity to the festivities. Some were heartfelt, others earned plenty of laughs, and all reflected the strong relationships surrounding the couple. The resident chickens even received a special mention after spending the day wandering around the property and inserting themselves into the wedding story.
Those chickens were never going to let a major event happen on their farm without being acknowledged! Their casual appearances added another funny, memorable detail to a reception already overflowing with country personality. Weddings often become most meaningful through these unscripted little moments—the things nobody could have planned but everyone remembers.
Caitlin and Adam’s private farm wedding was a beautiful reminder of how special a celebration can be when it feels true to the couple. From the boys finding their way into wedding mode and Caitlin’s last-minute hotel rescue to the vintage car, emotional vows and golden sunset portraits, every part of the day had its own story.
Travelling from Adelaide to photograph this Capella wedding was an absolute pleasure. Central Queensland welcomed me with striking scenery, friendly people and a celebration filled with warmth. Caitlin and Adam created a day that was relaxed, joyful and full of genuine country charm. I am so glad I had the opportunity to capture it—and perhaps just as glad that the wandering chickens received the recognition they deserved.
