Josh had a pretty special evening planned for Kelly. With their tenth anniversary just around the corner, he’d organised a romantic dinner at Windy Point Restaurant, overlooking the twinkling lights of Adelaide. A gorgeous meal, a spectacular view, and a little surprise tucked away for afterwards. Kelly was in for quite the evening, although she had absolutely no idea just how memorable it was about to become!
I was particularly excited when Josh contacted me about photographing his Windy Point Lookout Proposal, as this location happens to hold a very special place in my own heart. It’s actually where I proposed to my wife, Luisa! Clearly, Josh has excellent taste when it comes to romantic locations. Having experienced those pre-proposal nerves at Windy Point myself, I knew exactly how much this moment meant to him.
His plan was lovely and relatively straightforward. After enjoying dinner together, he’d take Kelly for a little stroll down to the lower lookout, find a beautiful spot overlooking Adelaide, and get down on one knee. I’d be waiting nearby with my camera to capture the whole thing without giving away the surprise.
Of course, even the best-laid proposal plans occasionally encounter a few unexpected challenges. On this particular evening, Windy Point was a whole lot busier than either of us had anticipated!
A Romantic Dinner at Windy Point Restaurant
Perched high in the Adelaide foothills, Windy Point Restaurant has long been one of those special places people visit when they have something worth celebrating. The panoramic views across Adelaide are rather spectacular, particularly after sunset when the city begins glowing beneath the hills. It’s an intimate setting for a romantic dinner, making it a popular choice for anniversaries, celebrations, and, of course, proposals.
For Josh and Kelly, dinner was the perfect way to begin their evening. Approaching a decade together is a pretty significant milestone, and a night out at one of Adelaide’s most romantic restaurants was already a wonderful way to celebrate. Kelly could simply enjoy the food, the atmosphere, and a lovely evening with her partner, completely unaware of what he had arranged for afterwards.
Meanwhile, Josh had the added excitement of knowing there was a rather important question waiting to be asked. I always find it fascinating photographing surprise proposals because one person is going about their evening as normal while the other is carrying around this enormous, wonderful secret!
The restaurant’s location also made perfect sense for his plans. With the lower lookout just a short walk away, he could naturally suggest heading outside to admire the views after dinner. No elaborate excuses required, no complicated detours, just a romantic walk together beneath the night sky.
I loved the simplicity of it all. After nearly ten years together, Josh was about to make another beautiful memory in a location already known for its romantic atmosphere.
An Unexpectedly Busy Night at Windy Point Lookout
As I usually do when photographing a surprise proposal, I arrived at Windy Point well ahead of time. Getting there early gives me a chance to check the available light, scout out camera angles, and make sure there aren’t any surprises waiting for us when the big moment arrives.
Well, there was definitely a surprise waiting for us this time!
Both the upper and lower Windy Point car parks were absolutely packed with car enthusiasts. It appeared that quite a gathering had decided to make the most of the clear evening, with vehicles filling the parking areas and people enjoying the atmosphere. Ordinarily, this would be perfectly fine for anyone visiting the lookout, but it wasn’t quite the peaceful, intimate setting Josh had been hoping for!
After having a look around, I contacted Josh to give him a heads-up about the situation. The lower lookout was still accessible, but finding a quiet little corner was going to be tricky. There were people everywhere, cars constantly coming and going, and rather more potential spectators than we’d originally anticipated.
I suggested that he walk Kelly directly towards the far end of the lower lookout. There was considerably more space out there, making it our best option for a little privacy. The trade-off was that we wouldn’t have quite as much of Adelaide’s sparkling skyline in the background, but at least they wouldn’t be standing right in the middle of the car park!
Fortunately, the weather was on our side. The sky was beautifully clear, with plenty of stars visible overhead. While we might have been sacrificing some of those iconic city lights, the lovely night sky offered a different sort of atmosphere for their special moment.
Josh took the unexpected change in his stride, and we adjusted our plans accordingly. Sometimes being a proposal photographer in Adelaide means thinking quickly on your feet, especially when a popular public location has other ideas about how the evening should unfold!
A Surprise Proposal Beneath the Stars
With dinner finished, Josh and Kelly made their way down towards the lower Windy Point lookout. I was already waiting with my camera, keeping an eye on their approach and preparing to photograph the moment Josh finally popped the question.
Under normal circumstances, I try to maintain a fairly generous distance during surprise proposals. The idea is to capture everything as naturally as possible while remaining completely inconspicuous. Couples shouldn’t feel as though a photographer is hovering nearby while they’re enjoying such a personal experience!
This particular setup made that rather difficult.
With cars continually moving in and out of parking spaces, there weren’t many safe or practical positions where I could remain hidden and still have an unobstructed view. I couldn’t simply stand well back across the car park, particularly with vehicles manoeuvring around me and the couple potentially disappearing behind parked cars.
That meant I had to position myself considerably closer than I usually would. Not exactly the undercover photography operation I’d imagined, but thankfully Josh was focused on the rather important task ahead of him!
The two of them walked towards the end of the lookout, with Adelaide stretching out in the darkness behind them. There was a lovely sense of anticipation as Josh found his moment, gathered his courage, and prepared to ask Kelly a question ten years in the making.
And then, down he went onto one knee!
Despite the busy surroundings, the proposal itself was wonderfully personal. After all the planning, the little adjustments, and the nerves, Josh was finally asking Kelly to marry him.
She said yes!
There is always something incredibly rewarding about being present for that exact moment. The surprise, the excitement, and the enormous smiles afterwards are the sorts of genuine reactions I absolutely love capturing as a photographer.
The car enthusiasts might have given Josh and Kelly a little more of an audience than expected, but they certainly didn’t prevent the evening from becoming a very special one. If anything, it made their Windy Point Lookout Proposal a story they’ll have plenty of fun retelling in the years to come!
Romantic Photos Outside Windy Point Restaurant
Before wrapping things up, we headed back towards Windy Point Restaurant to make use of the building’s exterior lighting. The artificial lights around the entrance provided another opportunity for some romantic portraits, adding a little warmth and atmosphere to our nighttime photography.
This was particularly handy given just how dark the lookout itself had become. Restaurant lighting can be surprisingly useful for engagement photography, offering illuminated backgrounds and interesting architectural features without needing to bring an entire portable lighting studio along!
We took a few photographs around the front of the building, combining the existing lights with my own flash where needed. These images had a different character from those at the lookout, with the warmly lit restaurant providing a lovely reminder of where Josh and Kelly’s evening had begun.
I particularly enjoyed incorporating the restaurant into their photos because it played such an important role in Josh’s proposal plans. This wasn’t simply a random location they’d chosen for a portrait session. It was where they’d shared their special dinner, where Josh had been eagerly anticipating his big moment, and where their engagement story had started to unfold.
And considering my own history with Windy Point, it was rather lovely to see another couple adding their story to this special little corner of Adelaide.
With a few final photographs captured, we called it a night and left Josh and Kelly to enjoy the excitement of their engagement. No drawn-out posing session, no complicated itinerary, just a relaxed little collection of memories from an unforgettable evening.
Congratulations, Kelly & Josh!
Josh and Kelly’s engagement was such a fun reminder that a proposal doesn’t need everything to go precisely according to plan to be absolutely wonderful. The unexpected crowds, the slightly altered location, and my rather less-than-stealthy photography position all became part of the adventure.
What mattered most was that Josh had planned something incredibly thoughtful for Kelly, celebrating nearly ten years together with a beautiful evening at one of Adelaide’s most romantic locations. And when the moment arrived, he asked that all-important question beneath a sky full of stars.
I was especially thrilled to photograph this one because of my own connection to Windy Point. Knowing that Josh had chosen the same location where I proposed to Luisa made the evening feel just that little bit more personal. It’s lovely to think that this Adelaide lookout now holds such a special memory for another couple!
A huge congratulations to Kelly and Josh on their engagement! I hope your tenth anniversary is every bit as wonderful as the evening you spent celebrating at Windy Point, and that the next chapter of your lives together is filled with plenty more adventures.
