Mortlock Library Wedding Reception – Vivian & Rohan

After their beautiful ceremony at the historic Carclew house in North Adelaide, Vivian and Rohan held their wedding reception at the magnificent Mortlock library. This place is one of those locations that wedding photographers such as myself dream of shooting at, as the Mortlock Library provides sumptuous backdrops for some really intricate looking wedding photographs. It’s just a stunning space to visit and work in.

While commonly known as the Mortlock library as a wedding venue title, the building is actually now only a wing of the overall State library. The building now known as the Mortlock Wing was opened on 18 December 1884 as a Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery for the colony of South Australia with 23,000 books and a staff of three. In modern times, the Mortlock wing has been sandwiched between more modern additions to the state library and state museum, but the old French Renaissance design of the building is still freely visible and celebrated. The Mortlock library as a wedding venue actually boasts two separate locations to hold wedding celebrations. In Vivian and Rohan’s case we were heading to the larger, and grander of the two galleries which had been set up as a grand dining hall, complete with the marvellous two tiered book shelves lined with thousands of books all propped up on huge masonry columns. It’s really not hard at all to see why the library has been included in the world’s top 20 most beautiful libraries.

Mortlock Library Glamour photos

After arriving at the library after their wedding ceremony at Carclew house, we had a bit of time to make use of the stunning surroundings for a few glamour shots of Vivian and Rohan. The most stereotypical shot at this locations would have to be the bride and groom hanging out doing lovey dovey stuff near the Dent and Sons clock at one end. That clock by the way cost £50 in 1885, which is equivalent to $7,000 today. It’s stereotypical for a reason.. just look at those wonderful leading lines straight through the image lined with the texture of old books. It’;s an incredible sight.

Mortlock Library Wedding Reception

The reception itself was spread right throughout the main hall, with tables from the dance floor at one end to the taxidermy eagle at the other. The head table was located at the center, allowing for easy access for all guests to congratulate Vivian and Rohan. It was a fun night to be a part of, everyone there were really fun loving people, eager to get up and dance, while being a blast to talk to. I had a lot of fun!

Barossa Weintal Wedding – Shelley & Chris

  • Shelley & Chris

    Barossa Weintal Wedding

    Bride and Groom

Shelley and Chris held their wedding at the Barossa Weintal resort, located in the beautiful Barossa, and I had the privilege of being their wedding photographer. Shelley and Chris opted to take advantage of my flexible customizable wedding package so they had me at their wedding for 4 hours. Both Shelley and Chris looked spectacular in their fully white getups, and their supporting family and friends made for a beautiful day.

Barossa Weintal Wedding Ceremony

Shelley and Chris’ ceremony took place in a small courtyard on the grounds of the Barossa Weintal resort which was shrouded in the most wonderful creeping vine. When the sun was out from behind the clouds, the vines caused the most wonderful of dappled light throughout the ceremony adding to the atmosphere.

Barossa Weintal Glamour Shots

Shelley had only recently suffered from a medical condition so much of our time was spent in and around the gardens right near the courtyard their ceremony took place in. There were plans to use their limousine to travel to a nearby winery for a larger variety of shots, but unfortunately we weren’t able. Be that as it may however, the gardens in and around the resort were quite awesome in their own right, lending some amazing green hues and tones to my wedding photography.

Barossa Weintal Reception

It was only a few months since I last visited the resort for a wedding, and last time I had trouble figuring out what their reception room was actually built for. I had speculated that it used to be a barn of some sort, but it was all actually purpose built as a function room for the resort. The area is circular, with a huge pointing roof, not unlike a circus tent, only made of brick. Its a beautiful room and a lovely space for a wedding reception.

McLaren Vale Wedding – Bek & Spud

  • BEK & SPUD

    Mclaren Vale Wedding

    Kuitpo Forest wedding

Bek and Spud were a blast to be around and be their wedding photographer at their McLaren Vale wedding. Such a laid back and quirky couple the entire day was a joy to photograph 🙂 They opted to take advantage of my very reasonable full day rates, coupled with the rental of my photo booth, complete with a customised green screen background. Usually when I’m asked to cover a McLaren Vale wedding, I assume the venue would be a winery, however Bek and Spud’s wedding took advantage of the public speaking platform on the main street of Mclaren Vale, and then had their reception right next door in the McLaren Vale remembrance Hall. It was great little location, easy to navigate and nice to navigate. After their ceremony, we all hopped in a bus and headed down to a piece of Kuitpo forest I knew to take some photos amongst the tall pine trees in the area.

Preparation photos

Both Bek and Spud were being prepared on different levels of a two story rental beach house in nearby Aldinga Beach. Preparation was a fun affair, with both groups, the grooms men and bridal party quite keen on being as light hearted as possible. This is great as a wedding photographer as it allows me to capture their own personalities so much better while they are having fun and just being themselves. Was a wonderful morning.

McLaren Vale wedding ceremony

The public space next to the McLaren Vale Remembrance Hall is just off the main road of McLaren Vale and features a huge permanent awning that provided some much needed shade over Bek and Spud on what was a very sunny day. It’s a very open place, very suited for weddings, or other public events such as concerts or rallies having a small stage under the awning and a huge open concreted space for onlookers.

Kuitpo Forest wedding photos

The Kuitpo Forest was the first of many forest plantations in the Mount Lofty Ranges, planted in 1898 to ensure a sustainable timber supply for South Australia. Today the Forest serves as a popular hiking and camping location covering an area of about 36 square kilometres. The tall, slim and straight pines of the forest lends itself well to wedding photography providing a unique location not often seen in South Australia. I absolutely love heading here to make use of the incredible s-curves in the walk ways and straight leading lines of the trees! Unfortunately though, I feel as though I may have asked a little too much of Bek and Spud to climb a few hills to get some good vantage photographic compositions (sorry about that!) But I hope the photos I’ve produced make up for our little adventure!

Mclaren Vale wedding reception

The McLaren Vale remembrance hall served as a nice open and airy reception location with ample dance floor and space for quite a few tables. Bek and Spud had a buffet style sit down dinner where their guests served themselves and had some friends manning a bar for drinks. It all worked very well and was very personable.

Trinity Lutheran Church Wedding – Danielle & Adam

  • DANIELLE & ADAM

    Trinity Lutheran Church Wedding

    Seppeltsfield winery wedding

Danielle and Adam were married in one of the oldest little churches in South Australia on an incredible day amongst wonderful people. The entire day, despite being quite a long one for me was an absolute joy to be a part of. Their Seppeltsfield wedding was held at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Rowland flat then headed off down the road for glamour photos at the stunning Seppeltsfield winery which I had visited for a previous wedding. Finally their reception was held at the rather interestingly built Barossa Weintal Hotel. Danielle and Adam took advantage of my generous full day wedding package to have me right from the beginning of the bridal party’s preparation at their hairdresser’s in North Adelaide, right through to the end of their reception in Tanunda.

Preparation Photos

As I said, I was with the girls first, which kind of breaks from my usual itinerary for a wedding day, but they asked me to take photos as they were having their hair done so I went! I always aim to cover exactly what my clients ask of me!

After about 30 minutes of taking photos at the bridal party’s hair salon, I headed to the place of preparation for Adam and his grooms men. I was quite surprised to find that one of his grooms men was Jono, a groom I shot his wedding for only a few months earlier! It’;s absolutely crazy how often I bump into people I had previously met at other weddings I cover. Adelaide is such a small city in many ways 🙂

After the grooms men I then headed off to the house where Danielle was being prepared with her bridesmaids and flower girls after having had their hair done. The decor in their house lent itself well to the taking of wonderful wedding photographs, with a marble table for closeups of rings and bridal affects through to a wonderful lit doorway to hang the wedding dress.

Trinity Lutheran Church Wedding Ceremony

The Trinity Lutheran Church in Rowland flat was built in 1853 after the disastrous flooding of the Hoffnungsthal settlement nearby. However the original church no longer stands as a new Church was built in 1955. A pretty little church, the building boasts a beautiful single steeple and large square lobby with 3 way doors. Two leading outside while the third into the chapel proper. The church is surrounded by easily accessible vineyards which we made use of for wedding photos.

Directly after the ceremony, family photos and using the nearby vineyards for a few shots, we headed off down the road to the picturesque Seppeltsfield winery. The Seppeltsfield winery is an iconic winery in the Barossa region, with history dating back to 1851. The grounds offer absolutely amazing backdrops perfectly suitable for wedding photography.

Barossa Weintel Hotel Reception

The Barossa Weintel Hotel caters for weddings, big and small. Danielle and Adam’s wedding reception took place in their main room that was cause for much debate of what it used to be. The room was circular and it’s roof was raked into the centre resembling a rocket ship’s nose. While we were enjoying the marvellous fare provided by the staff, we put forward a number of theories, including grain silo through to old horse training building. Nothing really made a lot of sense for a number of reasons so it remained a mystery. Was a pretty room none the less, perfect for wedding receptions. Perhaps someone could enlighten me with a comment below on what it used to be?

St Pauls Hahndorf wedding – Belinda & Jono

The wonderful wedding of Belinda and Jono took place at the St Pauls Hahndorf church for their ceremony, then for their glamour photography ventured into Stirling and Port Noarlunga beach before heading to the Middlebrook Estate Winery in Mclaren Vale for their reception. Belinda and Jono had me as their wedding photographer for the entire day, taking advantage of my generous full day wedding package, and what a beautiful day it was!. Just before the ceremony we were getting a little worried that the day was going to ba an absolute stinker of a day, pushing 40 degrees for most of the week, the morning of Belinda and Jono’s wedding was no different. Fortunately, just as Belinda was walking up to the Church, it spat for about 20 seconds, cooling the whole day just that little bit.

Preparation photos

Jono was being prepared in Klemzig, and had the most awesome grooms men gifts I’ve ever seen at a wedding. Far from the usual things groomsmen have trouble with when getting prepared, for this wedding they’d be learning how to wield a katana. Jono bought them all an engraved katana sword as a groomsmen gift. How awesome is that?

Belinda was being prepared in the couple’s apartment in the Adelaide CBD. It was clear that Belinda and Jono thought along the same wave lengths as as soon as I walked into the door and she saw me eyeing the Lord of the Rings sword they had on their wall, she immediately started swinging it around! Belinda was prepared in next to no time and we were on our way to Hahndorf.

St Pauls Hahndorf wedding ceremony

The St Pauls Hahndorf church is part of the Lutheran Church of Australia  and dedicated in 1858 by German settlers who left the German provinces of Posen, Silesia and Brandenburg to escape religious persecution in 1838-39. However, the original church that stood became worn and dilapidated by the late 1880’s and it was decided a newer church was to be built. And that is the building we see today. It’s still over 126 years old, as this new church was built as the new St Pauls Hahndorf in 1890.

After walking around the grounds of the St Pauls Hahndorf church a bit, the original plan was to head to Kuitpo forest for some Australian themed wedding photography, however, due to the extreme heat during the week the forest was closed, so we had to find an alternative. I suggested a little known oasis that is the Woorabina Reserve, complete with a lake harbouring native turtles and koalas. Of which we saw two while walking about. After, on the way to the reception venue in Mclaren Vale, we headed to the Port Noalunga beach for a few beach shots.

Middlebrook Estate Winery reception

Belinda and Jono’s wedding reception was held at the Middlebrook Estate Winery in Mclaren Vale. A bit of a trek out from Hahndorf, but I certainly know what they chose this venue for their reception. The staff are fabulous and the setting is stunning, particularly at twilight as the sun just crests the horizon. The vineyards and gazebo, surrounded by sprawling grass is beautiful.
