Some mornings feel special from the moment the sun peeks over the rooftops, and this Easter Sunday was certainly one of them. Sam had been planning a beautiful Himeji Gardens proposal for Eugenia, complete with soft morning light, a peaceful spot in the heart of Adelaide and a surprise she wouldn’t see coming. Quiet, intimate and full of excitement, it was a lovely way to begin the day.
Sam had originally considered the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, but the early start and the arrangements involved made him rethink the location. My part of the plan was to blend in. Anyone walking through the gardens that morning would have seen me near the turtles, camera in hand, looking like another visitor happily photographing the surroundings. The challenge was staying close enough to catch Eugenia’s reaction without giving away why I was really there.
Sam had picked out a spot near a stone feature beneath a tree, where the morning light filtered gently through the branches. As he dropped to one knee, the quiet walk suddenly became something much bigger. Eugenia’s surprise and happiness were an absolute delight to photograph, and I could keep capturing those first reactions without interrupting them.

Once the secret was out, we spent the next hour wandering through the gardens for some relaxed engagement portraits. Himeji Gardens isn’t especially large, but its bridges, stone paths, water features and carefully arranged greenery gave us plenty of variety without having to venture far.
Sam and Eugenia couldn’t stop smiling. They danced on the bridge, shared little jokes beneath the branches and paused beside the pond to take everything in. There was no need for stiff posing or an elaborate photography plan. They had only just become engaged, and that excitement came through in every photograph.

That contrast was especially lovely with Sam and Eugenia. The gardens were peaceful, but the two of them were bubbling with excitement. Rather than interrupting that feeling with complicated poses, I let them enjoy each other’s company and photographed the natural little moments along the way.
After our stroll, the newly engaged pair headed off to their Easter breakfast with an extra reason to celebrate. Sam’s plan had worked, Eugenia had her beautiful ring and we had a collection of photographs from the very beginning of their engagement.
