Romantic Belair National Park Proposal – Marissa & James

There’s something lovely about a surprise proposal tucked away in the Australian bush, and Marissa and James’s Belair National Park proposal was a particularly sweet one. On a Saturday evening at Long Gully Picnic Ground, James had organised a quiet spot, beautiful late-afternoon light and a plan to pop the question without Marissa suspecting a thing. Of course, even the most carefully organised proposals can have a few unexpected visitors!

James had chosen Long Gully Picnic Ground, surrounded by the gum trees and open lawns of Belair National Park in Adelaide. It gave him room for a private moment and gave me a clear view of the action while staying out of sight. Planning the Belair National Park Proposal at Long Gully

Long Gully Picnic Ground is a peaceful part of the park, with a broad grassy clearing bordered by native bushland. James had booked the spot hoping to enjoy it without too many distractions, and we were aiming for that softer light late in the day. I’m always a fan of golden-hour photography, especially when sunlight filters through eucalyptus trees.

There was just one small problem. A group of park visitors and their enthusiastic dog had decided the clearing was a wonderful place to spend the evening too. James had to hold off on his big moment while they enjoyed the grounds. Not exactly what he’d pictured, but one of those little surprises you can’t always account for when planning something outdoors.

Meanwhile, I was hiding behind my car with my camera ready, keeping an eye on the couple without giving the game away. Apparently I did a rather convincing job: James couldn’t even find me from where he was standing! There’s a fine line between being discreet and disappearing completely.

Eventually, the visitors headed off and the clearing became quiet again. James had been patient, and now he finally had his chance. He turned to Marissa, dropped to one knee and asked the question he’d been waiting to ask. She said yes! All that waiting was immediately forgotten as the two of them celebrated together.

Engagement Photos Around Belair National Park

With the secret out and Marissa’s ring firmly on her finger, we stayed around Long Gully for some relaxed engagement photos. The open grass gave us room to play with the evening light, and the two of them were still buzzing from what had just happened. That’s one of my favourite things about photographing a proposal: there’s no need to manufacture a happy reaction when the excitement is already there.

We also wandered into the surrounding bushland, where the towering gums and earthy colours offered a different look from the picnic ground. Belair National Park has plenty of variety without needing to travel far, which is handy when you want to enjoy the moment rather than spend the whole evening moving between photo locations.

James and Marissa still had a little nervous energy, so I kept things playful. A run hand-in-hand, a few spins and some gentle teasing soon had them laughing together. The result was a set of photographs that felt relaxed and very much like them, rather than a long session of stiff poses.

Belair National Park is a wonderful option for couples who prefer native bushland and a quieter atmosphere to a busy city landmark. It’s within reach of central Adelaide, yet the lawns, walking tracks and tall trees can make it feel like a proper getaway.
