Some proposals feel as though they’ve been lifted straight from a fairytale, and Kaleb’s surprise for Mel at The Manor Basket Range was certainly one of them. With its castle-like stonework, elegant gardens and gorgeous fountain, this Adelaide Hills venue made a wonderfully romantic setting for a very important question.
Kaleb had seen one of my previous proposal shoots at Thorngrove Manor and got in touch with plenty of ideas, excitement and a healthy dose of nerves. He originally had his heart set on Thorngrove Manor, but eventually chose The Manor Basket Range for its grand stone buildings and beautiful fountain courtyard.
After a few chats, we settled on a quiet Friday afternoon when no wedding was scheduled. Kaleb would propose in front of the fountain with the manor’s impressive stonework behind them, while I stayed discreetly out of sight. It’s the sort of careful coordination that goes into photographing a surprise proposal in Adelaide — although, as we soon discovered, even the best plan can come with a surprise of its own!
The Manor Basket Range Proposal
Everything looked wonderfully calm in the setting, but behind the scenes there was a little unexpected activity. Just before Kaleb was ready to propose, a handful of people wandered out of the manor. They were preparing for a wedding the following day and had no idea they were about to wander through somebody else’s once-in-a-lifetime moment.
One couple even took a leisurely lap around the fountain, right where Kaleb had planned to get down on one knee. I watched from my hiding spot while he patiently waited for the coast to clear. Thankfully, he kept his cool, found his moment and dropped to one knee with the castle-like backdrop behind them.
Mel’s reaction was an absolute delight. The surprise quickly turned into a huge smile and a very happy yes! Those first few seconds are always my favourite to photograph: the disbelief, laughter and excitement all arriving at once. Kaleb had managed to keep his plans secret, and the little interruption beforehand only made the story more memorable.
Engagement Photos Around The Manor Basket Range
Once Kaleb and Mel had enjoyed that first burst of just-engaged excitement, we wandered around the grounds for some relaxed portraits. The Manor Basket Range has so much character, from its stone walls and landscaped pathways to the ivy-covered corners that give the property its old-world charm.
Without a wedding taking place that afternoon, we had the chance to explore at an easy pace. Mel was still admiring her ring, Kaleb was looking rather pleased with himself, and neither needed much encouragement to laugh together. That freshly engaged happiness makes the portraits afterwards feel especially natural.
We didn’t stay around the fountain and front steps. Across the road, an apple orchard offered a lovely change of scenery, with leafy branches, fallen autumn leaves and patches of light filtering through the trees. It gave us a quieter, more rustic contrast to the manor’s grand architecture.
Kaleb and Mel were happy to explore, and the photographs became less about finding the perfect pose and more about enjoying their first afternoon as an engaged couple. A walk together, a laugh between frames and a few affectionate moments were all we needed.
There was another lovely detail to this session: Kaleb is a wedding photographer himself! Photographing another photographer’s proposal brings a little extra creative camaraderie. He noticed the small details, was keen to try a few ideas and understood exactly why I’d chosen particular backgrounds and angles. It’s always flattering when somebody who works in the industry trusts you to document such a personal milestone.
A Fairytale Adelaide Hills Proposal
Kaleb and Mel’s proposal at The Manor Basket Range had everything I love about these sessions: thoughtful planning, a little unexpected comedy and a genuinely joyful reaction. The grand fountain provided a spectacular setting for the question, while the surrounding gardens and orchard gave us plenty of variety for their engagement photos.
