Barristers Block Wedding – Carly & Corey

Preparation

The girls started their morning at a gorgeous little cottage-style bed and breakfast just outside Mount Barker. The building looked as though it had once been an old stable, with rustic timber, stonework and plenty of character packed into every corner. It had that warm, slightly weathered Adelaide Hills charm that photographs beautifully and felt like such a natural fit for the rest of the day.

The gardens surrounding the property were lovely too, although the threatening weather meant we could not make quite as much use of them as I normally would have. Every time we thought about venturing too far outside, another dark cloud seemed to roll across the hills. Thankfully, the interior of the cottage offered plenty to work with, and the timber and stone created some beautifully textured backgrounds while everyone finished getting ready.

By the time the boys arrived, the girls were in the final stages of putting on their dresses. That gave us a small window to sneak outside with the guys for a few portraits in the garden. The light was soft and flattering thanks to the cloud cover, so although the weather looked ominous, it was actually rather lovely for photos. We grabbed some relaxed portraits before shifting our attention to one of the more unusual parts of the morning.

Rather than following the traditional routine of keeping Carly and Corey completely separate until the ceremony, they had planned a first look. Better still, they had come up with a way of doing it that allowed them both to see each other at exactly the same moment.

First Look

Most first looks involve one person standing with their back turned while their partner approaches from behind. Carly and Corey decided that was far too ordinary. Instead, they walked towards one another with one of the groomsmen holding a large sheet between them so neither could see the other.

Once they were both in position, the sheet was dropped and the groomsman made a quick escape out of the way. It meant that rather than one person seeing the other first, they both got that reveal at the exact same second. It was quirky, sweet and perfectly suited to them. Their reactions were completely natural too, which made the whole thing even more enjoyable to photograph.

There was another special reveal for Carly before the ceremony, with her dad and brother getting their own first look as well. Those family moments can be every bit as meaningful as the big couple reveal. There is often a completely different kind of emotion involved, especially when a parent sees their daughter fully dressed for the first time on her wedding day.

Carly and Corey then took some time away from everyone else to share private vows. I really love this approach for couples who want to keep part of their wedding ceremony just for themselves. It allows for something deeply personal without the pressure of saying absolutely everything in front of a room full of people. With their private vows exchanged, it was finally time to head across to Barristers Block for the ceremony.

Barristers Block Wedding Ceremony

The original plan had been to hold the Barristers Block Wedding ceremony outside amongst the trees. Unfortunately, by this point the weather had made its intentions fairly clear. The drizzle, damp ground and looming rain meant the forest ceremony was no longer the sensible option, so everything was moved indoors.

Thankfully, an indoor ceremony at Barristers Block is hardly a disappointing backup plan. The interior has loads of personality, with heavy timber posts, rustic architectural details and a large wood fireplace giving the room a wonderfully cosy atmosphere. It almost feels like stepping into an old converted stable, which suited the style of the entire day beautifully.

It is certainly a dark space from a photography point of view though! I was also shooting Super 8 film throughout the day, so both my modern cameras and the distinctly less-modern film technology were being pushed pretty hard in the low light. Super 8 is not exactly famous for loving dark interiors, but that is part of the charm of working with it. The grain, movement and imperfections are exactly what make the footage feel so nostalgic.

The ceremony itself was simple, relaxed and full of laughs. That really became the theme of the entire day. Carly and Corey were constantly making each other smile, and their friends and family were very much on the same wavelength. There was no stiff formality or feeling that everybody needed to behave perfectly. People laughed, reacted, joked around and simply enjoyed being there.

That sort of atmosphere makes photographing a wedding incredibly easy. Instead of trying to manufacture expressions or force moments, I can simply watch what is happening and capture it. Carly and Corey gave me plenty to work with, and even though the weather had completely changed the original ceremony plans, the indoor setting ended up feeling wonderfully intimate.

Glamour Photos

Once the ceremony finished, we knew we were racing the light. The heavy cloud cover meant sunset was effectively arriving much earlier than the official time, so there was no wandering slowly around deciding where to photograph next. We headed straight outside and made the most of what was left.

The forest surrounding Barristers Block was naturally high on the list. Even under gloomy skies it is such a beautiful environment, and the darker weather actually helped create a more dramatic atmosphere. The trees took on deeper greens, the wet ground picked up little highlights and everything had that unmistakable Adelaide Hills moodiness.

Carly and Corey were brilliant throughout it all. They were happy to walk, laugh, squeeze together and work with whatever conditions we had. When a couple is relaxed about a little rain, the photographs almost always become better because nobody is wasting energy worrying about staying absolutely pristine.

Once darkness properly settled in, the wedding photography took a slightly more adventurous turn. We headed back outside into the drizzle and found ourselves sharing the space with some of Barristers Block’s resident animals. A couple of Shetland ponies and donkeys decided to become part of the evening, which is not something you can exactly schedule into a wedding timeline.

Photographing newlyweds in the dark, in light rain, alongside curious ponies and a donkey sounds slightly chaotic written down, but it was fantastic. The drizzle caught the artificial light beautifully, creating little sparkling streaks through the photographs, while the animals added something completely unexpected. Some of my favourite wedding images come from moments like these because there is no way to manufacture them.

The darkness also gave us an opportunity to create something completely different from the daytime photographs. Rather than bright greenery and soft natural light, we had dramatic backlighting, rain hanging in the air and the shapes of the surrounding property disappearing into the darkness. It made for some wonderfully atmospheric images and turned what could easily have been considered poor weather into one of the highlights of the photography.

Barristers Block Wedding Reception

Once everyone was back inside, the Barristers Block Wedding reception quickly shifted into party mode. The relaxed energy that had been there all day carried straight through dinner, speeches and into the dancing. There was never any shortage of people smiling, laughing or getting involved.

Chunes & Mooves handled the entertainment for the night, and they certainly knew how to keep the room moving. Once the dance floor opened, it stayed busy. There are some weddings where guests need a little encouragement to start dancing, but this crowd clearly did not require much convincing. People were out there all night.

From a photography perspective, a packed dance floor is always brilliant. There is so much happening at once that you can simply move through the crowd looking for reactions, friendships, ridiculous dance moves and those little split-second expressions people never realise they are making. Carly and Corey were right in amongst it too, enjoying the party rather than disappearing away from the action.

The warmth of the people involved in this wedding really stood out to me. The weather might have been chilly and damp outside, but inside the atmosphere was completely different. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there celebrating Carly and Corey, and that feeling came through strongly in the photographs.

Their Barristers Block Wedding was a brilliant reminder that a wedding day does not need perfect weather to be beautiful. Plans changed, the forest ceremony moved indoors and we spent part of the evening photographing ponies and donkeys in the drizzle. None of that took anything away from the day. It simply became part of the story.

Carly and Corey embraced every part of their day exactly as it came. They laughed through the unpredictable weather, shared a wonderfully quirky first look, enjoyed their private vows, celebrated with the people they loved and finished the night with a packed dance floor. Throw in a few Shetland ponies, a donkey and some sparkling rain after dark, and it turned into a Barristers Block Wedding that was impossible to forget.
