There are few things quite as exciting as being secretly involved in someone’s proposal. The planning, the anticipation, the slightly suspicious behaviour from the person carrying an engagement ring around in their pocket. It’s all part of the fun! Stewart and Levi’s Adelaide Botanic Gardens Proposal was an absolutely gorgeous little adventure, complete with spring sunshine, beautiful white roses, an unexpected question and one very surprised bride-to-be!
Tucked away in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD, the Adelaide Botanic Gardens is one of my favourite places for photographing couples. There’s an incredible amount of variety within its leafy pathways, from carefully manicured flower beds to wonderfully overgrown corners that feel miles away from the surrounding city. For an October proposal, when the gardens are waking up with all their spring colour, it’s particularly lovely.
Stewart had been chatting with me for a little while before the big day, making sure everything was organised for his surprise. He had his heart set on a beautiful little spot in the International Rose Garden, surrounded by white roses and framed by a natural archway of greenery. It was wonderfully romantic without needing any elaborate decorations or grand gestures. Just a pretty location, the woman he loved and a very important question!
Planning Stewart and Levi’s Surprise Proposal
One of the things I really enjoy about photographing surprise proposals around Adelaide is helping to work out the little details beforehand. It’s not quite the same as photographing a wedding, where everyone generally knows what’s about to happen! A proposal requires a bit of sneaky preparation, a suitable location and an understanding of exactly where the magic is supposed to unfold.
Stewart had already done much of the hard work by choosing his spot within the International Rose Garden. He wanted something intimate and naturally beautiful, where the surroundings would complement the occasion rather than overwhelm it. The white roses were a lovely choice, particularly with the greenery forming an arch around the space. From a photography perspective, that sort of natural framing is fantastic, drawing attention straight towards the couple while giving the photographs plenty of depth and character.
The Adelaide Botanic Gardens is especially useful for a surprise proposal because an innocent stroll through the gardens doesn’t immediately give the game away. It’s a perfectly normal place to spend a sunny afternoon together! There’s no need to invent some complicated reason to visit a secluded location or convince your partner to dress up for an occasion they know nothing about. Although, as Stewart was about to discover, the clothing situation can still become a rather amusing talking point!
For anyone considering their own romantic surprise, I always recommend thinking about the direction you’ll approach from, the lighting and how visible your chosen spot might be to other visitors. A little preparation goes a long way towards keeping the moment natural. I’ve photographed all sorts of surprise proposals in Adelaide, and the most enjoyable ones are usually those where the couple can simply enjoy themselves without worrying about what the photographer is doing.
Adelaide Botanic Gardens Proposal in the International Rose Garden
October in Adelaide can be absolutely glorious, and Stewart and Levi were treated to a beautiful sunny day for their proposal. The International Rose Garden was looking wonderfully fresh, with the white roses providing an elegant backdrop to the little patch of greenery Stewart had chosen for his big moment.
There’s something rather special about the International Rose Garden as a proposal location. Situated near the impressive Bicentennial Conservatory, it’s a beautifully maintained part of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, filled with colour, carefully arranged garden beds and little pockets of romance. The roses give the area a distinctly formal feel, while the surrounding greenery softens everything nicely. Stewart’s chosen archway brought those two elements together perfectly.
As Stewart and Levi approached the spot, I was ready to photograph the moment he’d been planning for. This is always the exciting part of a surprise proposal for me. One person knows exactly what’s about to happen, the other is simply enjoying what they believe to be an ordinary outing, and I’m quietly watching for that split second when everything changes.
Stewart got down on one knee and asked Levi to marry him!
And she said YES!
Her reaction was absolutely adorable. Levi genuinely hadn’t seen it coming, and the surprise quickly turned into a wonderful mixture of happiness, excitement and laughter. There was even a little complaint about not being completely dressed for such an important occasion! Apparently Stewart hadn’t given her quite enough warning that she’d be getting engaged that day. Whoops!
Of course, that was part of what made the whole thing so lovely. She might have preferred a little more opportunity to plan an outfit, but the excitement of the proposal was certainly more important. It was a wonderfully genuine reaction, and exactly the sort of unscripted moment I love capturing as an Adelaide proposal photographer.
One of the nicest things about photographing an actual proposal, rather than recreating the occasion afterwards, is that you get all those spontaneous little expressions. The initial surprise, the delighted smile, the way a couple looks at one another immediately after the question has been answered. Those reactions simply can’t be manufactured with a carefully directed photoshoot.
Stewart had managed to keep his secret, Levi was now wearing an engagement ring, and the beautiful white roses had provided the perfect setting for their newest adventure together. I’d call that a rather successful afternoon!
Engagement Photos Around the Bicentennial Conservatory
With the important question answered and the initial excitement settling into a very happy reality, we headed off for a short engagement photoshoot around the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. This is one of my favourite parts of covering a proposal. The nerves have disappeared, nobody needs to keep anything secret anymore, and the newly engaged couple can finally enjoy a relaxed wander together.
Our first stop was around the more overgrown areas near the Bicentennial Conservatory. While the International Rose Garden had given us a neat and elegant setting for the proposal itself, these nearby corners offered a completely different atmosphere. Thick foliage, leafy pathways and all sorts of natural textures made for some beautiful, intimate photographs.
As a photographer, I really enjoy working with greenery that has a slightly wild appearance. Rather than having every plant perfectly arranged, branches and leaves create layers around a couple, making the scene feel wonderfully immersive. It also gives me plenty of opportunities to photograph through foliage, using the natural surroundings to frame a portrait without needing to direct every little movement.
Stewart and Levi were very easy company as we wandered between locations. There’s something lovely about the energy of a couple who have only just become engaged. The smiles come without any encouragement, the cuddles happen naturally, and there are usually a few moments when one of them looks down at the ring as though they’re still trying to believe what just happened.
I always prefer to keep this part of a proposal photoshoot fairly relaxed. A little guidance with where to stand and how to make the most of the light is usually all that’s needed. The photographs feel much more personal when couples have room to interact with each other rather than spending the entire session following a collection of complicated poses.
The gardens surrounding the Conservatory worked beautifully for this. Even though we were right in the middle of Adelaide, the abundant foliage made our photos feel like we’d wandered into a secluded little woodland. It was a lovely contrast to the bright, open rose garden where Stewart had popped the question.
A Beautiful Beginning for Stewart and Levi
Stewart and Levi’s Adelaide Botanic Gardens Proposal was such a lovely reminder that sometimes the simplest plans create the most wonderful memories. There were no elaborate displays or complicated surprises waiting around every corner. Just a thoughtful man who had chosen a beautiful spot amongst the white roses, a completely unsuspecting partner and one very happy answer.
Levi might not have been quite as dressed up as she would have liked for the occasion, but that little detail made her reaction all the more endearing. It’s often the unexpected comments and bursts of laughter that make these stories memorable. Years from now, I suspect the outfit complaint will be just as much a part of their proposal story as Stewart getting down on one knee!
The beautiful October weather gave us the chance to explore some of my favourite photographic corners of the gardens, from the overgrown greenery surrounding the Bicentennial Conservatory to the first delicate flowers appearing along the wisteria arch. A short engagement photoshoot was all we needed to capture a lovely collection of portraits celebrating their brand-new engagement.
It’s always a privilege to be included in such an important moment, especially when I’ve been trusted with keeping the whole thing a secret beforehand. Stewart did a fantastic job organising everything, Levi’s surprise was absolutely genuine, and their happiness throughout the afternoon was a delight to photograph.
If you’re planning an Adelaide surprise proposal and would love to have the moment captured naturally, feel free to have a look through my proposal and engagement photography portfolio. I love helping couples organise these little adventures, whether that’s amongst the flowers of the Botanic Gardens, overlooking the Adelaide skyline or somewhere completely personal to the two of you.
A huge congratulations to Stewart and Levi on their engagement! Thank you for having me along to capture such a beautiful, happy afternoon. Here’s to plenty more adventures, laughter and wonderful memories together!
