Is a ‘Same Day Edit’ Right for Your Wedding?

Your wedding is undeniably one of the most significant milestones in your life. You want to ensure that you capture all the memories that day so you can look back at them and remember the best moments, this often means having both a wedding photographer and videographer to capture your day using both the art of photography and videography.

Many wedding trends are popping up, and one of the most lesser known is having a same-day-edit wedding video. A same day edit or ‘SDE’ is a video that a wedding videographer produces on the same day of your wedding. It’s a same day edit video because the video is shown to guests during the reception to help relive some of the moments of the past few hours. It usually only goes for a minute or two, but it can be nice to showcase!

Why Is It Important to Hire the Right Professional Wedding Videographer?

Ideally, you’ll want to work with an experienced team to do this. This is because they’re not only tasked to take videos of various moments of your wedding, but they also have to work fast to produce a compelling and impressive edit of the video to show to guests.

A great tip is to have a wedding photographer work hand in hand with the videographer to capture the moment in a different perspective and through still photographs. This is another feature you can also add to your same-day-edit wedding video as a bit of a montage of both photography and videography.

Why Do I Need a ‘Same Day Edit’ Wedding Video?

  1. Final Wedding Video Preview

One of the reasons having a same-day-edit video is ideal is because you’ll have a sneak peek of what your final wedding video would look like. You’ll usually be waiting weeks or even months for the final video, but at least with an same day edit, you’ll get to relive short moments of your wedding, surrounded by family and friends on your actual wedding day!

I usually put together a 1 minute long social media edit for every wedding I cover the day after, the great thing about having a same day edit done being able to view it that night!

  1. Help Guests Relive the Moments

If you had an intimate wedding ceremony, chances are, not all of your guests have witnessed this momentous event. With that being said, a same-day-edit video is a fantastic way for guests to watch the ceremony and feel part of the whole experience.

  1. Watch Heightened Moments

The great thing about same-day-edit wedding videos is that, if done well, it heightens special moments during the event. These moments include the anticipation of your partner as they walk down the aisle, your cute flower girls and ring bearers making their way down the altar, the exchange of vows, and of course, the first kiss.

The truth is, we all can’t see these moments, and there will be some that we might’ve missed. Thankfully, wedding videographers will help you appreciate and see these tender moments and appreciate even the smallest joys.

  1. Share It Everywhere

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many guests may not be able to make it to the wedding. Thankfully, same-day-edits can make every guest, even if they’re not in the venue, feel like they’re part of the ceremony since you can easily share your same day edit footage online.

The great thing about this is you can instantly share your most precious moments and have them immortalized online, making it a convenient way to track the memories of your wedding day.

Partner this up with amazing pictures from your wedding photographer, and you’ll instantly have an immersive online album of your wedding.

Having a Same Day Edit Can Elevate Your Wedding Experience

Having a same-day-edit wedding video allows you to see and relive all the special moments of your big day while still celebrating your big day! This won’t only make you and your partner happy, but it will also make your loved ones and guests feel the same joy you felt in those very moments.

If you want to elevate your wedding experience, work with a credible wedding photographer and videographer and collaborate to produce an amazing same-day edit of your wedding that you’ll cherish in your heart forever.

4 Common Misconceptions About Wedding Videography

Misconceptions about wedding videography

Your wedding is probably going to be one of the most memorable moments of your whole life, so it’s only natural to want to capture every single detail of the day. Wedding videography helps record all the heartfelt emotions and standout moments of the event that photography alone may miss.

However, you might be a little sceptical about some hearsays from fellow brides and grooms who may have opted to give the videography little to no thought, or perhaps regretted their decision not to have a videographer after their big day.

4 Common Misconceptions About Wedding Videography

Here are some common misconceptions about wedding videography and why you shouldn’t take them at face value.

“Photos Are Enough”

Often it’s the justification for not getting a videographer or having a budget for it is because a wedding photographer is enough. We agree that wedding photography is an important part of planning, especially if you want to see all the stills, stolen shots and photos where you didn’t think you were smiling, but you were. However, wedding videography can be just as important.

Videos can capture the sounds and movement of a party that some photos are unable to emulate—the popping of the champagne bottle, the clinking of glasses during a toast, the song you first danced to, the messages from your parents. It’s an unmatched moment to have all that on tape and to watch the wedding through the cinematic lens of your videographer.

If it’s budget constraints you’re worried about, there are plenty of photographers out there – my self included – that offer ‘hybrid’ video coverage allowing a highlight video snippet of your day to be captured alongside photography as a single person – saving money on having a second dedicated videographer in tow.

“Anyone Can be the Videographer”

Although it seems tempting to cut costs and get a nephew of yours to take the video through their camera, you won’t get the same result as professional wedding videographers from a studio. There’s sound editing, transitions, angles and shots that have to be considered when all is said and done.

Let me highlight one of those points – SOUND RECORDING! While your nephew may have the camera, it’s not that often they also have the appropriate audio equipment and backups for if it doesn’t work out right.

You’ll get a better product and outcome if you get some experienced people into the venue. Check price lists and background for past work they’ve done that you might want in your mini-film. The quality of a great wedding video is simply incomparable and something to be treasured forever.

“Choose a Videographer the Night Before”

It’s much more recommended to book a videographer in advance, especially experienced ones who might have their schedules full months, even years before an actual wedding. It also gives your chosen videographer a chance to get to know you and the vision you’re going for in the video.

It can be personalised as much or as little as you want to. If you want to incorporate a specific concept into the wedding video outside of the ceremony and reception, you could have a small discussion about that, too.

“Wedding Videos Are for One-Time Viewing”

This can be a personal choice, but wedding videos were made to stand the test of time. Rewatching it helps you observe new details. You can show the recording to other loved ones who might not have been able to attend due to different circumstances. You can even show the videos to your children and grandchildren!

Or if you’ve forgotten what it’s like, you can always look back at it with a particular fondness, especially after so many years have elapsed. You have proof of experiencing that much happiness, laughter, love and tears.

These misconceptions about wedding videography being that it tends to be watched once and never again tends to stem from the fact that traditional wedding videography products can be a chore to watch, being hours long. Modern videographers like to offer ‘highlight’ montages these days to combat this – providing a short snippet of your day edited to music that is much easier to watch.

Wedding videography can be a truly delightful thing that will help you earn a keepsake after the big day. And hey, we won’t judge you if you want to fast forward and skip it to the part where you both say ‘I do.’

Keep in mind these common misconceptions about wedding videography and hopefully you’ll think twice about having a video made on your day. We highly recommend it!

How to include guests who can’t attend your wedding

How to include guests who can’t attend your wedding

More often than not, when organising your guest list for your wedding, you’ll find out that some guests you have a deep connection with cannot make it due to any number of reasons. These guests are people who perhaps are too old and frail to venture out to your wedding venue, or perhaps they are living overseas. I thought I might make a bit of a list of ideas I’ve seen when covering weddings as a wedding photographer of how to include guests who can’t attend your wedding.

Ideas for how to include guests who can’t attend your wedding

Live stream your ceremony

Providing of course that your wedding venue has good mobile phone coverage, you could opt to live stream your wedding ceremony via your mobile device. Modern smartphones with cameras all have this ability whereby you can set up a face to face call with the guest that could not make it and instead of facing the camera towards yourself, simply turn it around so that it’s facing the altar. In this way your guest can participate in the wedding ceremony in real time.

If you’re a little more tech minded one could also set up a live streaming event with a service such as livestream, where you’re able to hook up a camera with a PC with an internet connection. Using this kind of service more than just one guest could watch the stream at once.

Since writing this article in 2016, I have started offering not only live streaming services, but also Virtual reality recording services so let me know if you’d like to make use of what I offer! 🙂

How to include guests

Record a video message to play at your reception

One wedding that I fondly remember was the wedding of Michaela & Paddy at the SC Pannell Winery where the reception featured a video of well wishes from guests all around the world who could not make it. The reactions from Michaela seeing the faces of loved ones talking to her via video was a beautiful addition to the day.

Make use of a Videographer

As a wedding photographer, I’m often working alongside a videographer, and I will be soon expanding into this area as a new service. The best use of a wedding videographer is of course having a full video documenting your wedding day in ways that still photography cannot. A great idea for how to include guests who cannot attend your wedding is to hold a viewing party at some point after your wedding where you can take your video to the guests who couldn’t make it. You can also opt to send a copy of your video to guests abroad, or even use the internet.

Represent guests not present with their photo

Having guests who could not make it represented by framed photos is a wonderful idea to remember those who could not make it for one reason or another. This idea is often used for those guests who would have loved to attend but who had passed on before the wedding date.

Many brides often have a family member that is so important that they carry a photo charm of them attached to their bridal bouquet – whch is a lovely gesture for guests who have touched the heart of the bride.

These are just some of the ideas I’ve picked up throughout the dozens of weddings I’ve covered. If you have another idea to perhaps add to this list I’d love to hear about it!
