St Laurence’s Church Wedding – Sarah & Mal

  • SARAH & MAL

    St Laurence’s Church Wedding

    Kiss in the Pews

Sarah and Mal had me as their wedding photographer for 6 hours on their big day backdropped by the beautiful St Laurence’s Church in North Adelaide. The weather on the day was super hot and dry which made it a bit of a challenge to get everything done in time, and all the while Sarah was quite a way along in her pregnancy 🙂 That being said however we did get everything we wanted done, except perhaps some photos out the front of the Bonython Hall on north Terrace, but is was a small thing to skip in order to keep the day rolling 🙂

Preparation

I started the day with Mal and his groomsmen being prepared together at their house in the North of Adelaide. All the boys were sitting around having a chat when I arrived and jumped into action, putting on their shirts and outfits just after. It was a bit of a whirlwind as I only had around 30 minutes before heading over to the girls.

The girls were being prepared in an apartment nearby the St Laurence’s Church in North Adelaide. The goal was to be ready within 30 minutes and head off to the university of Adelaide for ‘first look’ photos on the footbridge over the Torrens. Makeup was running a little late however.

First Look Photos

Once we got to Adelaide uni we first went about doing a little ‘first look’ on the Torrens footbridge where Sarah walked up to Mal and surprised him with her dress, we then moved as quickly as we could up through the uni campus and used the buildings behind the museum and along North Terrace for some photos.

St Laurence’s Church Wedding Ceremony

St Laurence’s Catholic Church in North Adelaide is a historic church built in North Adelaide in 1868 in a time when North Adelaide was still used as farmland. The period in which it was built is showcased by it’s architecture, complete with a dark wooden roof inside, it’s walls are covered with white paint and large stained glass windows with illuminates the interior quite well for such a historic church.

Sarah and Mal’s congregation filled a little over half of the available pews within the church who witnessed a shorter version of a traditional Catholic wedding where Sarah and Mal were sat up the front while the priest would direct proceedings.

East Terrace Continental Wedding Reception

Once the family photos were done – unfortunately in the beating sun out the front of the church – everyone retreated to the East Terrace Continental hotel to recuperate at their wedding reception. It was quite warm in the small space of the hotel upstairs, so once we cut the Marvel-themed cake and had a few drinks, we head out to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens for some more photos.

Botanic Gardens Glamour Photos

My aim was to keep to the shade for photos around the Botanic Gardens as we had already run about quite a bit during the day and I felt everyone was feeling the heat a bit. Thankfully we could take our time a bit at this time of day as there was nothing we had to get back to super quick. Once we were done, I head back to the reception with the bridal party for a few more group photos before heading home.

St Patricks Church Wedding – Katie & Stairs

  • Katie & Stairs

    St Patricks Church Wedding

    On the road

It was super fun to be the wedding photographer at Katie and Stairs’ wedding at Adelaide’s St Patricks Church on Grote st as the entire day was super laid back and simple but still full of fun and laughter all day.

I was asked to be their photographer all day from preparation through to the end of their reception at the Jade pub in the city. We travelled to the South Terrace Veale and Himeji gardens for their glamour photos directly after their ceremony

Preparation

The day started as it usually does with the preparation of Stairs’ and his entourage at his parents house just outside of the city. Much of the morning was spent placing ribbons on his prized VW wagon before starting to get dressed.

Katie and her bridal party were being prepared in a beautiful house just to the south of the city, complete with stunning atrium and wood work all throughout the house, was an awesome spot for bridal preparation photos! The big surprise of a VW combi was a lot of fun for Katie and everyone there – apparently Stairs had organised the bridal car unbeknownst to anyone else.

St Patricks Church Wedding Ceremony

The St Patricks Church on Grote street in Adelaide has been described as one of the most impressive churches in the Archdiocese of Adelaide, having celebrated it’s centenary in 2014, this old church certainly lives up to it’s reputation in grandeur. With it’s tall central ceiling decorated in gold leaf and huge roman columns either side of the congregation pews it certainly make for an impressive view once walking in it’s doors.

Katie and Stair’s modest guest list barely filled the first half of the available seating within the church, but this only made the ceremony that much more intimate while their harpist strummed a delightful melody throughout the ceremony.

Glamour Photos

After the mandatory family photos were finished out the front of St Patricks Church, we head over to the Himeji and Veale gardens on South Terrace to make use of the greenery for their glamour photos. It was very important to take it slow and have fun with the whole bridal party all throughout which made the whole experience super laid back and enjoyable.

The Jade Wedding Reception

We arrived at The Jade pub a little late for the reception party, but this really wasn’t much of an issue as one of the only traditional parts of their night was speeches and cutting their cake – the rest was just sitting back and enjoying themselves while surrounded by family and friends – which I think is an awesome way to spend your wedding night!

Mulberry Lodge Wedding – Heidi & Jory

The Mulberry Lodge, just out of Mclaren vale, on the road to Willunga was the backdrop to Heidi and Jory’s intimate wedding ceremony on an extremely sunny and rather windy day in early January. I was asked to be their wedding photographer for 6 hours which saw me cover parts of their preparation through to the cake cutting at their reception next door at the Au Pear restaurant. One fun thing I did differently at their wedding was experiment in making a short ‘highlight’ video with the aim for gaining some experience in producing video like this as a future offering to augment my services – look out for that 😉

Preparation

The day began at Jory’s place of preparation where all the groomsmen were getting ready and enjoying a rather nice drop of red in the form of a bottle of Penfolds Grange! Rather a nice treat for a beautiful day.

Mulberry Lodge Wedding Ceremony

The Mulberry Lodge is a small, intimate setting suitable for small weddings where there’s a reasonable sized grassy area next to the lodge with a pretty tree that provides shade over where the bride and groom stands in front of their congregation. As the day was quite windy, the tree and all the foliage surrounding the congregation was blowing quite heartily, and with the beating sun made for quite the challenging ceremony to photograph.

For glamour photos we first used the gardens and driveway surrounding the Mulberry Lodge before heading over to the Au Pear restaurant’s vineyards next door for a bit of variety. My goal was to use the sun’s light as much as possible to create a lovely light and airy feel to Heidi and Jory’s photos.

Au Pear Restaurant Wedding Reception

The Au Pear restaurant’s reception hall looks to be an old rustic farm shed complete with old machinery still inside. It made the entire reception party feel quite laid back and heartfelt, especially when combined with the live band and hand made decorations scattered about the place, including the wedding cake which Heidi had made herself.

Belair National Park Wedding – Justine & Nathan

  • Justine & Nathan

    Belair National Park Wedding

    Under the trees

It was a rather overcast day in early December for Justine and Nathan’s wedding at the Belair National Park. Rain was threatening all day, but thankfully only showers for brief periods all day. Good thing too as the ceremony and following picnic-style period in between the ceremony and reception was all out in the open within the park. Turned out to be an awesome day though. I was asked to be their wedding photographer for the entire day and I had an absolute blast!

Preparation

Started off the day with Nathan and his boys getting ready at their home. I arrived to the boys all sitting about playing Super Smash bros on their Nintendo Switch before getting them moving to get dressed. There was a neat empty room off to the side of their living room where there was plenty of room to move about and take some rather atmospheric shots 🙂

I think the best experience of the morning was at Justine’s place of prep at her parent’s place. The emotion certainly got hold of Justine’s Dad who was holding back tears all morning, it was a delight to see and made the whole morning that much more emotional to witness that kind of fatherly love. Justine was fairly calm and collected through the whole morning though, quite keen on getting her dress on and moving the day forward 🙂

Belair National Park Wedding Ceremony

Their wedding ceremony took place in a hireable spot of grass within the Belair National Park in the shadow what I’m told to be the tallest certain type of gum tree in South Australia. Backdropped by native fauna, the place is a lovely setting, nearby some lush greenery ready for photos after.

Belair National Park Picnic

The great thing about this spot is that it boasts plenty of room to set up a ceremony, and a picnic while still having plenty of room for lawn games including cricket, chess and marks up. Everyone had a blast, and I got to witness one of the most intense games of giant jenga ever conceived.

Glamour Photos

For the glamour photos we wandered around the local area nearby where Justine and Nathan’s ceremony took place using the lovely greenery, and an awesome tree I discovered. before heading to another spot on the other side of the Belair National Park nearby the railway station. It’s always a great shot there with a huge archway of gum trees throwing themselves over the walking trail. Once we were done here we head off to the Glenelg Golf Course for the reception. While waiting to head in we used the scenery there for a few shots too.

Glenelg Golf Club Wedding Reception

The reception was quite a boisterous affair at the Glenelg Golf Club, with dancing going on all night and everyone having an absolute blast! The girls and boys all got into the bouquet and garter tosses, and everyone from young to old I’m sure were rubbing their feet the next morning from all the dancing they did the night before! It was a lot of fun circling the dance floor with my camera s when I walked by I’d always get someone throwing a funny face or going crazy in front of me!

Botanic Gardens Wedding – Renee & Ben

  • RENEE & BEN

    Adelaide Botanic Gardens Wedding

    Walkway shot

It was a stunningly sunny day for Renee and Ben’s lovely friends and family oriented wedding amongst the greenery of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Renee and Ben opted to host their intimate little wedding in the southern gazebo, known as the Summer House where they were protected from the harsh sun, and was able to fit a modest guest list made from close friends and family. I was asked to be their wedding photographer for 3 hours, which allowed me to capture their ceremony, glamour photos around the gardens then their reception at the Earl of Leicester Hotel.

Before the Ceremony

While waiting about for Renee to arrive, Ben was wandering about greeting guests and organising seating and moving council worker orange tape that had been left nearby 🙂 Renee arrived a little late which raised nerves a little, but the entire day was super laid back and relaxed so I don’t think it hampered any of the frivolity.

The ceremony itself was a short and simple affair, with all the guests fitting under the gazebo to witness the coming together of these two beautifully bubbly personalities. Even the constant drone of the nearby motorsport festival had little bearing on Renee’s huge grin she wore all throughout the ceremony.
