Look great in your wedding photos

Not a lot of people enjoy having their photos taken, but it’s your wedding day so you’re going to be in front of your wedding photographer pretty much all day, so how do you look great in your wedding photos? As a wedding photographer who has shot many dozens of weddings, let me give you some advice. Even with the perfect wedding dress, make-up, hairstyle, it’s not how you look to the eye that makes you gorgeous in your wedding photos, but rather how you look to the camera. This is why celebrities and models always look different in those tabloid magazines without those teams of make-up artists and Photoshop masters, they all know this to be the case. All that matters is how you look to the camera when it comes to producing great wedding photos.

Tips to look great in your wedding photos

Tip 1 – Lay off the fake tan

Yes, being tanned is attractive, but if you’re like 99% of brides out there you’ll be wearing a white, or near white dress which causes even the most subtle fake tan stand out more than it has to. This isn’t to say that all fake tans are bad, but consider perhaps doing it a bit earlier than you would usually just so it fades into a more natural look days before your wedding day. Fake tans are especially noticeable when you’re standing next to your new husband and your skin tones are horribly mismatched. Any wedding photographer worth their salt can mitigate the worse effects of having a fake tan, but when a photograph has you both near to each other it becomes more than obvious and near impossible to fix in Photoshop.

Tip 2 – Relax and have fun

Easier said than done right? If you’re not used to being around giant cameras, having your wedding photographer in your face all day can be daunting and you probably wont be thinking about how to look great in your wedding photos. Just remember this is your day and everyone around you wants you to have the best possible experience, especially your wedding photographer. Remember all those wedding photos you were looking up on pintrest before your wedding day? Well they are all real couples too, why do they look amazing? Because they are enjoying themselves. Your photographer should be able to make you comfortable, have a bit of a sense of humour and be relate able to you. It’s very important you meet with your photographer before your day, if not for an engagement shoot for a coffee and chat. Perhaps bring along personalised props also? Perhaps your really into AFL football? bring a football and you can play marks up? Fan of swords? bring some! It’s all part of the fun.

Tip 3 – Move about

There’s nothing worse than a photo shoot where all the photographer wants you to do is stand in one spot and stare at the camera. Move about, hug and kiss your husband, talk and laugh at each other while looking in each other’s eyes. Start to think of how you and your husband touch each other, hold each other, or kiss each other. What’s your favourite way of leaning into him or hugging him? Your wedding photographer should be able to coach you in this regard, but the honest feelings you show towards one another are always the best images.

Tip 4 – Time your shoot

Generally Adelaide weddings happen around 3pm, with 4-6pm free for a photo shoot. This time is not the worst, but it’s also not the best time to be taking photos in Adelaide. Due to the sun being very harsh in the South of Australia, often the best photos are taken as it starts to get a bit dark, after 6pm. That’s said however you can plan your photo locations to be shady areas leading up to the later periods where you might like a nice sunset photo taken on a beach? So if you want to look great in your wedding photos, think about where you want to go and when. If I’m your wedding photographer I can suggest some locations based on the time you’d want to be there.
