Always nice to catch up with little ones I’ve photographed before as little ones! In this case it was Baby Hadley who has now become a big sister to little Baby Sabine! We head out for a photoshoot at Pine Reserve in Aberfoyle Park for a bit of family photography and play on the play equipment and made use of the lovely early morning light shing through the trees.
Truth is that I had already shot little Sabine a few months prior while she was still in the belly! Having a set of progressive photos like this really makes for a beautiful story of a family growing together and I think it’s just beautiful!
Photoshoot at Pine Reserve
We started early for the photoshoot at Pine Reserve in Aberfoyle Park to make use of the sun shining through the trees. baby Sabine wasn’t overly happy with the new sensations of being photographed, and was possibly a little cold while out and about, but she felt quite comfortable in Mum’s arms, so we made sure to get plenty of whole family shots while she was happy.

Studio Photoshoot
After galavanting around Pine Reserve, we head back to my home studio – which was the first time I had used the new studio space I now have access to but baby Sabine still wasn’t overly happy – until she fell asleep which made for some beautiful shots.
The birth of a newborn is one of life’s most wondrous moments. Perhaps nothing can compare to the feeling of watching a beautiful smile stretched on a newborn’s face, or the little movements they make. Such special moments bring a sense of love and affection among partners. Therefore, capturing such momentous time becomes imperative.
Looking at the first photo of your newborn can be overwhelming yet exciting. You and your partner would love to share a glimpse of your little one with the world. However, most photographs captured in the hospital end up blurry or not suited for printing and putting on display.
If you want to capture the best baby photographs, consider following our tips for photographing your newborn at the hospital. This article will help you understand how to capture beautiful photographs of a new baby at the hospital.
5 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn At The Hospital
Think about the lighting
When photographing your newborn at the hospital, it’s often the case that lighting in your room isn’t the best. Open all the blinds in the room to let in the natural light. Most photographers understand the importance of natural lightning during a baby shoot because it helps capture some of the best shots. Apart from natural lighting, turn off all the other lights in the room. The combination of natural lighting and artificial lighting can be quite ugly – however this does not mean you can’t experiment. Make the most of this combination to capture the best first newborn photograph.

Plan The Shoot After a Feeding
As much as you want to take out your camera and start capturing every possible moment of a newborn, we recommend you don’t. Birth is tiring for both mom and newborn; giving enough space and time to both can help you capture the best newborn photos with mum. One of the best ways to do this is by planning your shoot after a feeding session. A well-fed baby will be calm, content, and happy. Most newborns are calm right after a feeding session, and they tend to sleep right throughout the photoshoot. Besides, you will be able to capture some adorable shots of newborns dreaming the day away.

Basic Clothing
A newborn photoshoot should be comfortable for both the little one and partners. Therefore, we recommend new parents bring an extra pair of basic clothing. You can choose to wear something plain and simple – preferably earth tones or whites – during the shoot. Avoid wearing bold patterns or clothing with big logos as it may cause unnecessary distractions in the photo. The same tip could be applied to the newborn. Choose plain onesies for your baby to let their outfit blend in with the hospital setting.

Choose The Right Angle
Newborn photography is all about angles. Clicking the photograph from the right angle will ensure you achieve the best shot of the newborn and mom. Make sure you position the camera slightly higher so that your angle is not showing up the baby’s nostrils. By doing so, newborns’ nostrils will barely show up, allowing you to achieve beautiful images. If you want to add an extra element to the photograph, consider trying different angles and welcoming new parents in the shoot. Simply keep the right angles in mind.

Focus on Details
For newborn photography, always focus on small details. Consider focusing on capturing their tiny hands, feet, fingers, ears, and cheeks. You can also choose to capture a shot from the top of their head showing small baby hair. New parents love watching through such tiny details of their newborn.

Also consider memorialising the moment with models of your little one’s feet and hands – it can be a lot of fun getting them made and they look amazing on the wall!

=The beautiful Saint Dimitrios Orthodox Church was the backdrop to baby Iliana’s baptism in mid September. This incredible church is lined wall to wall with ornate decorations detailing the stories of the bible and makes for an incredible backdrop for anything as a wedding venue to baptisms.
Being a part of little Iliana’s Saint Dimitrios Orthodox Church Baptism was an absolute honour to be a part of and was delightful to see such a large congregation come together for such a special ceremony.=
Iliana’s Saint Dimitrios Orthodox Church Baptism
Iliana’s whole family turned up to witness her christening and her transition into holy life, which was wonderful to see. Carried by her god mother and assisted thoughout the ceremony, little Iliana was quite brave throughout, with only a little cry as the priests immersed her into the holy water. Once she was out however, she was quite happy again!
I got to have a bit of a chat with the church hand who was setting up for baby Ilania’s Saint Dimitiros Orthodox Church Baptism, and I was astounded to find out that the church was purpose built for things like baptisms, with a plumbed chalice for the holy immersion right at the center of the stage – meaning that the transport of that much water need not be a hassle! I just thought that was interesting.

Tips for Capturing Your Newborn’s First Moments
Follow the Photographer’s Instructions
If you want the photoshoot to be successful, it’s crucial to follow all the instructions of your photographer. It’s not just about getting the perfect poses from your baby, but it’s also about making sure they’re comfortable and free from any pressure – also for safety reasons. You should already expect your newborn to cry, or not exactly be helpful while taking shots — but for things to continue as planned, it would help if you listened to what the photographer says.
Depending on your agreement and the style of shoot you’re aiming for, the shoot can be done in a studio, in your home or on locations like a park. Whichever you prefer, you can still expect to receive excellent results given that you listen to them; after all, newborn photographers have the skills and experience to produce beautiful photos.

Know Your Baby’s Sleeping Schedule
Newborn babies tend to sleep a lot, and more often than not, they won’t have a fixed sleeping schedule. Despite that, it’s vital to keep track of the time they’re awake for several hours and when they’re checked out for the rest of the day.
Before the shoot, it would help if you booked a session when you know your newborn will be sleepy for at least two hours, which can give the photographer enough time to take the photos. having your little one asleep actually helps set up a cute shot without too much fuss.
On the other hand, if you want photos of your newborn’s beautiful eyes, make sure you have plenty of distractions and ample food for when they inevitably become cranky! That’s because a newborn baby typically isn’t too big of a fan of being away from their Mummy or daddy for too long, and being on a posing beanbag for too long is a new experience they may not find comfortable.

Learn to Read Your Newborn’s Body Language
After two weeks, newborn babies tend to become uncomfortable due to the different experiences they start to feel in their bodies. That’s why if you’re hiring a newborn photographer, it’s essential to figure out your baby’s body language!
While each baby offers a unique personality, there are still techniques known to work on almost all babies to get them to calm down and keep them from crying. Take note that newborns shouldn’t be forced to pose right away. Instead, make it your mission to keep them comfortable during the entire photoshoot—the poses will then come naturally!
You also have to be prepared for the worst, including the relentless crying of newborns. In fact, bawling babies can be part of the art of newborn photography, especially if captured well. But if you prefer favourable outcomes, you have to do everything it takes to prevent them from becoming upset.
