Second Valley Wedding Shoot – Ebony & Punit

Ebony and Punit contacted me because, although they had already celebrated their wedding, they were a little disappointed with the photos they had come away with. Their guests had been trusted to capture moments throughout the day, which sounds lovely in theory, but wedding guests are there to celebrate, laugh, eat, drink and be part of everything happening around them. Taking beautiful, considered wedding portraits understandably falls a little further down the priority list.

That gave us the perfect excuse to plan a completely separate Second Valley Wedding shoot, without the timeline pressure, ceremony schedule or reception waiting in the background. We could simply head somewhere beautiful, explore the landscape and create the sort of wedding portraits Ebony and Punit had hoped to have from the beginning. Second Valley was an easy choice. It is one of my favourite coastal locations south of Adelaide, with dramatic cliffs, beaches, rolling hills, long grass, rocky outcrops and little hidden corners that can look completely different depending on the light.

Planning a Second Valley Wedding Photo Shoot

I know Second Valley quite well, and one of the biggest advantages of photographing there is how much variety is squeezed into a relatively small area. You could easily spend hours wandering around without repeating the same type of backdrop twice. There is the jetty, the rocky coastline, the beach tucked beside the cliffs, elevated views across the water and some wonderfully rugged terrain further around the coast.

I suggested meeting at about 4:30pm. Sunset was expected somewhere around 6pm, which gave us enough time to work through the softer afternoon light, catch the colours changing around dusk and then stay around for some darker photographs once the sun had disappeared. I already had a few night-time ideas in mind, so I was rather excited about where the shoot might eventually end up.

Ebony and Punit arrived a little later than planned, but that was hardly surprising. Second Valley is a decent drive from Adelaide, and travelling down the Fleurieu Peninsula always seems to take just long enough for arrival times to become a little optimistic. Thankfully, the light was still beautiful when we started and there was no reason to rush.

We began our little adventure around the Second Valley jetty. The jetty is one of the most recognisable parts of the area and makes a lovely starting point for a wedding shoot. There are strong lines leading out toward the sea, wide views across the coastline and plenty of space to allow a couple to simply walk, chat and settle into being in front of the camera.

The lower afternoon sun gave everything a softer glow and added some lovely depth to the water behind them. With Ebony back in her wedding dress and the two of them wandering along the coast together, it immediately felt as though we were giving them a little piece of their wedding day back.

Wedding Photos Among the Hills and Long Grass

After spending some time around the water, we made our way uphill. Second Valley is not only about cliffs and beaches. The elevated landscape above the coast has its own character, with long wispy grass, open skies and broad views stretching across the surrounding terrain.

This was where the session became a little more playful. The heavier posing disappeared and we concentrated more on off-the-cuff moments between Ebony and Punit. Walking through the grass, laughing together, spinning around and generally embracing the fact that they had dressed up again purely for the sake of creating photographs they could enjoy.

These are often some of my favourite moments during wedding photography. Beautiful portraits do not always need to involve perfect posture and carefully positioned hands. Sometimes it is simply about putting a couple somewhere lovely, giving them something small to do and waiting for their personalities to take over.

The breeze moving through the grass added plenty of motion to the scene, while the fading sunlight gave us softer tones across the hillside. It felt completely different to the photographs we had created beside the jetty only a short time earlier.

That variety is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing around Second Valley so much. A single afternoon can produce coastal wedding portraits, grassy countryside images and dramatic night photography without needing to drive between multiple locations.

Chasing the Last Light at Second Valley

As the sun disappeared, the character of the entire location began to change again. Blue skies became deeper, details along the coastline started disappearing into shadow and the rocky areas around us became much more atmospheric.

I had been eagerly waiting for this part of the shoot because one location in particular was on my mind from the very beginning. Second Valley has a natural rock arch down along the coast, and I really wanted to take Ebony and Punit there once it became properly dark.

Getting there is slightly more adventurous than wandering around the jetty. The path becomes rougher, the rocks become more challenging and suddenly wearing a wedding dress starts to seem like a slightly ridiculous choice of hiking attire.

Ebony handled it brilliantly.

I was genuinely impressed watching her make her way down toward the rock arch in her dress. There was some careful climbing, plenty of checking footing and more than a little effort involved from everyone. Carrying camera equipment through rocky terrain certainly helped turn the final part of the shoot into a bit of a workout.

It was absolutely worth it.

Night Wedding Photos at the Second Valley Rock Arch

Once we reached the natural rock arch, the final photographs became some of the images I had been most excited to create all afternoon. Photographing after dark means you are no longer simply reacting to the light that happens to be available. You can begin building the scene yourself.

Using lighting around the rock formation allowed us to highlight Ebony and Punit while still showing the dramatic shape of the arch surrounding them. The darkness helped simplify everything else, leaving the couple, the rocks and the textures of the coastline as the main elements of the photographs.

There is something wonderfully surreal about standing beside the ocean at night in wedding clothes while flashes of light illuminate huge rock formations around you. It felt a long way removed from a traditional wedding portrait session, which was precisely what made it so much fun.

The rock arch gave us a dramatic finishing point to the evening and felt like a proper reward after climbing down there. We spent a little while experimenting with compositions, moving lights around and using different angles before eventually deciding that we had probably asked enough of Ebony’s wedding dress for one evening.

A Second Chance at Wedding Photos

The nicest part of Ebony and Punit’s shoot was knowing why we were there in the first place. They had already had their wedding. The celebration had already happened. This afternoon was purely about giving them couples photographs that felt a little more special and intentional.

There is no rule saying wedding portraits have to be created on the actual wedding day. Sometimes the timeline is too busy. Sometimes the weather refuses to cooperate. Sometimes guests take plenty of photographs but nothing quite captures the couple in the way they had hoped.

Putting the wedding clothes back on and heading somewhere beautiful can be an incredibly relaxed way of creating those photographs afterwards. There is no pressure to return to a reception, no bridal party wondering where everyone has disappeared to and no schedule dictating when the session has to finish.

Ebony and Punit’s Second Valley Wedding shoot ended up becoming a full little adventure around one of South Australia’s most striking coastal locations. From wandering along the jetty and exploring beneath the cliffs to running around through the long grass and eventually climbing down to that incredible natural rock arch after dark, we managed to create a wonderfully varied collection of wedding photographs.

It was slightly late, a little rocky, occasionally exhausting and completely worth it.

Tiny House on the Prairie Proposal – Kyle & Bianca

There is something extra exciting about photographing a proposal when one person has gone all-in on making the moment feel completely unique. Kyle certainly wasn’t taking the easy route when he planned his Tiny House on the Prairie Proposal for Bianca. There was a private venue, a projector, a carefully prepared video, fairy lights, a blindfold and one photographer quietly hiding away hoping not to get spotted. Plenty of moving parts!

Tiny House on the Prairie in the Adelaide Hills was such a gorgeous setting for it too. Tucked away from the busier parts of Adelaide, the property feels wonderfully private, with a pretty lake, trees, open space and strings of fairy lights creating a beautifully intimate atmosphere once the sun begins to disappear. Kyle had managed to organise the venue entirely for the two of them, giving him the freedom to create something much more elaborate than simply finding a pretty spot and dropping to one knee.

The original plan didn’t quite survive contact with technology, though. What was supposed to be a daylight proposal gradually transformed into a sparkling evening one thanks to a rather stubborn video setup. As it turned out, the delay actually gave the whole proposal a completely different feel — and possibly made it even more memorable.

The Setup

Kyle had clearly put a huge amount of thought into how he wanted Bianca’s proposal to unfold. Rather than simply bringing her somewhere beautiful, he had prepared an audio visual presentation celebrating their relationship together. The idea was to lead Bianca into the space without her knowing exactly what was waiting for her, play the video, and then surprise her properly once it had finished.

He had organised a projector and screen beneath the fairy lights at Tiny House on the Prairie, turning the outdoor area into their own little private cinema. Having the venue to themselves meant there was no worrying about strangers wandering through the background or somebody accidentally giving away what was happening. From a proposal photography point of view, having that privacy is fantastic. It gives everyone a little more freedom and means I can position myself somewhere useful without having to dodge random people strolling through at exactly the wrong moment.

Of course, technology has a wonderful habit of choosing important occasions to become difficult.

When Kyle arrived to put the final touches together, the video simply wasn’t behaving itself. What should have been a relatively straightforward setup started taking considerably longer than expected. There was troubleshooting, adjusting and probably a few moments where that projector wasn’t Kyle’s favourite object in the world. Meanwhile the clock kept ticking and the daylight he had originally planned to propose in was steadily disappearing.

Proposal plans always benefit from a bit of flexibility. I’ve photographed enough surprises around Adelaide to know that something nearly always runs slightly differently from the original idea. Sometimes somebody arrives early. Sometimes they’re late. Sometimes the weather decides it wants to join in. In this case, the culprit was technology.

The important thing was that Kyle got everything working.

By the time Bianca was due to arrive, the light had faded considerably and the fairy lights around the property were beginning to glow properly. The projector was also far brighter and easier to see against the evening darkness. The proposal had accidentally shifted from a daytime setup into something much moodier and more romantic.

Not exactly Plan A, perhaps, but a pretty spectacular Plan B.

Tiny House on the Prairie Proposal

Bianca was celebrating her birthday weekend, which gave Kyle the perfect excuse for organising something special without immediately raising alarm bells. As far as she knew, he had simply planned a particularly sweet birthday surprise. She knew something was happening, of course — being led somewhere while blindfolded tends to suggest that — but she certainly wasn’t expecting what was coming next.

Kyle carefully led her into the proposal space while I was tucked away nearby doing my best secret squirrel impression. Photographing surprise proposals is always slightly hilarious from my side of things. I’m often crouched behind trees, lurking around corners or pretending I have an extremely compelling reason to be photographing absolutely nothing while waiting for the couple to arrive.

Bianca was led into position beneath the fairy lights before the blindfold came off and Kyle revealed what he had created.

Waiting for her was the projector playing a video montage of their relationship together. It was such a personal way to begin the proposal. Rather than jumping immediately into the big question, Bianca had time to watch their story unfold across the screen, completely unaware that Kyle had one rather significant surprise still waiting.

The darkness that had initially seemed like a problem worked beautifully here. The projector stood out brilliantly and the fairy lights surrounding them were glowing across the property. Everything felt wonderfully secluded. No crowds, no distractions and no indication that there happened to be a photographer nearby quietly documenting the whole thing.

Then the video finished.

Kyle dropped to one knee.

Bianca’s reaction said absolutely everything.

She genuinely hadn’t expected a proposal. In her mind, this was an elaborate birthday surprise from somebody who had obviously put a lot of thought into celebrating the weekend with her. Suddenly seeing Kyle kneeling in front of her holding a ring changed the entire meaning of what she’d just watched.

Those moments are exactly why I love photographing proposals. There is a tiny period where someone is processing several different emotions at once — surprise, excitement, disbelief and the sudden realisation that this moment is actually happening. They’re wonderfully unfiltered reactions and they disappear within seconds, which makes being there with a camera such fun.

Most importantly, she said yes!

My other little victory was that Bianca still hadn’t noticed me.

I’d managed to stay hidden throughout the arrival, the video and the actual proposal. Once Kyle had finished asking the rather important question and they’d had a moment together, I finally emerged from my hiding spot.

Surprise number two.

Secret squirrel photographer mission successfully completed.

Once everything had settled down a little — and Bianca had recovered from discovering she’d just become engaged and had apparently been photographed through the whole thing — we headed off for a few portraits around the property.

This is always one of my favourite parts of proposal photography. The nervous anticipation has disappeared, nobody has to keep a secret anymore and couples are generally floating around on a ridiculous post-proposal high. It makes photographing them incredibly easy because there is usually no shortage of genuine smiles.

Tiny House on the Prairie gave us plenty to work with without needing to go wandering too far. One of the prettiest features is the little lake on the property, particularly once the surrounding fairy lights begin reflecting through the scene. By this stage it was properly dark, so we were able to make those lights a big part of the photographs.

Rather than fighting against the lack of daylight, I leaned into it. Evening portraits can look beautifully cinematic when there are practical lights already available in the environment, and the fairy lights gave the photographs that lovely warm glow you simply don’t get earlier in the afternoon.

We wandered around the lake, found a few different angles and let Kyle and Bianca enjoy those first moments of actually being engaged. I always try to keep these portraits relaxed rather than suddenly turning a proposal into an enormous styled photoshoot. The emotional part of the evening has already happened naturally, so the photographs afterwards should still feel like an extension of that rather than something completely separate.

There is also something rather nice about having engagement photographs taken immediately after the proposal. There isn’t any need to recreate the excitement later because it’s already there. Every grin is fresh, the ring has only been on Bianca’s finger for a few minutes and they’re still processing what just happened.

Their evening wasn’t ending at Tiny House on the Prairie either. Kyle and Bianca were heading into nearby Hahndorf afterwards for a family dinner, which made the proposal a wonderful beginning to the rest of their celebration. Bianca had started the evening expecting a lovely birthday surprise and was now heading to dinner with a brand new fiancé.

Not a bad change of plans!

This Tiny House on the Prairie Proposal might have happened later than Kyle originally intended, but the timing ended up creating such a gorgeous atmosphere. The troublesome video eventually worked, the projector looked fantastic against the night, the fairy lights were glowing beautifully, Bianca didn’t suspect a thing and somehow I managed to stay completely hidden until everything was over.

Sometimes the little things that don’t quite go according to plan end up giving a proposal its personality.

For Kyle and Bianca, what began as a carefully organised daylight surprise became a beautifully intimate evening proposal beneath the fairy lights — followed by a few romantic portraits around the lake and a celebratory family dinner in Hahndorf.

A pretty wonderful way to spend a birthday weekend in the Adelaide Hills, and an even better way to begin an engagement.
