6 Tips on Preparing for Your Wedding Photographs

Preparing for Your Wedding Photographs

Let’s face it: not everybody is comfortable posing in front of the camera. Often, we feel too much pressure to look good, especially when we have to take photographs for big events like weddings! It really isn’t the most natural thing in the world – and yet you want to get the most ‘natural’ wedding photos anyway!

To prepare yourself for your wedding photographs on one of the the most emotional days of your life, we’ve compiled a few things to remember before your wedding! Keep reading for a couple of tips on how to pose for your wedding pictures.

6 Tips on Preparing for Your Wedding Photographs

Tip #1: Build Trust with Your Photographer

Partnerships with your wedding suppliers are a must. You have to work with a team that understands how much this big day means to you! Given that, you must build trust with your wedding photographer. Allow them into your own outlook and give them time to understand how you really want to capture moments.

On top of that, make sure that your taste matches their style. Work with them in preparing an engagement shoot or a prenuptial shoot. Explore and run by locations with your photographer to get their opinion. Once you build a unique rapport with your photographer, there’s no doubt that you will achieve your dream photos!

When preparing for your wedding photographs – it obviously stands to reason that you should get along with the person actually taking your photographs!

Tip #2: Pick the Perfect Glam Team

In hiring a hairstylist and a makeup artist for your wedding day, it’s important you assess their skills. These artists should have to not only make you look fabulous as you walk down the aisle, but also make you look fabulous in your wedding photos!

There could be a trial-and-error stage, but the preparations are worth it. Be vocal; say what you want and say what you’re not comfortable with. Let them know their full schedule ahead of time. Remember, the couple to be wed always gets the final say!

One tip in finding the right makeup artists for you is to have a trial run where you may make the most of having makeup done before an engagement shoot – that you will have a much better idea on how your makeup will turn out with your photography from your big day.

Tip #3: Eat Right

What you eat shows up on your skin and face. Make sure you don’t eat too much junk or sodium that will cause you to bloat! Allow yourself a diet that hits all the right food groups, and don’t focus too much on your weight! You are your own worst critic when it comes to this – remind yourself that you are always going to be the most stunning person on your big day!

When you eat right, make sure it’s all about feeling good and getting that healthy glow. This way, you’ll effortlessly look beautiful in all of your shots!

Tip #4: Follow a Night time Routine

Following a night time routine will do wonders for your mind, body, and even skin! In the weeks and nights prior to your wedding, make sure to get lots of rest by sticking to a bedtime.

Stretch before or practice some yoga before hitting the sack. Incorporate beauty tools in your skincare routine. Allow yourself to wind down before sleeping soundly, and then wake up feeling refreshed. You never know, this could even help you after your wedding day!

Tip #5: Be Punctual

If there’s one thing a bride shouldn’t stress on, it would be time. When everyone and everything is on time, things will go smoothly, and there would be no need to rush. So, stick to the itinerary! Get a friend or your Maid-of-Honour to remind everyone of their schedules and know that you’re the boss on the day, and being late yourself is pretty much expected!

Tip #6: Relax and Keep It Natural

Do what feels right with you and your partner. Feel free to explore poses and options and get some inspiration. But then again, don’t feel pressured to replicate the photos and poses from wedding magazines, especially if they’re not something you’d do! Be realistic and make the moment feel as genuine as possible.

If you feel comfortable, your photos will look comfortable. I always try to take my photographs of people actually doing things for this reason – as opposed to turning people into mannequins.

It’s completely normal to sense a little panic the closer the big day arrives. Milestones, after all, need to be captured because these are the memories worth holding onto forever. But at the same time, remember that you are not alone! Once you’ve built a wedding team consisting of your new friends, trusted circle, and family, it all makes preparing for your wedding photographs that much easier.

Are you still looking for a wedding photographer in Adelaide, or the Adelaide Hills? Sacred Heart Church Wedding – Katie & Jakob

OK, this wedding turned out to be an absolutely stunning day, beautiful people, an organised – well thought out timeline, amazing locations and topped off with the most incredible sunset which Katie and Jakob were more than keen on heading out to use! The Sacred Heart Church in Semaphore was the historic venue of their ceremony, while we head out to Port Adelaide’s famed Crozier Street, and the Semaphore Jetty for some beautiful glamour photos before retiring to the Palais for their reception. I was lucky enough to be asked to be their wedding photographer for their entire day and I’m so pleased they did! I’ve provided them with almost 800(!) photos from their day which is about 150 more than usual just because it was such an awesome day!

Preparation

Jakob had an unusual request to begin the day at his local pub, sharing a beer with his groomsmen at the crack of dawn for some photos which was a great way to shake off any nerves and have some fun with is boys before starting to get dressed back at his parent’s house. The entire morning was jovial and if Jakob was feeling any nerves, he didn’t show it!

Katie and her entourage were being prepared at a house a short distance away, perfectly suited for taking photos as the walls were painted with a neutral grey and was just a stunning house overall! Katie and her ladies were a bit late in getting there as her makeup artist was on the other side of the city, so putting on the dresses and putting the finishing touches was a little rushed before heading out – but we got it all done.

Sacred Heart Church Wedding Ceremony

The Sacred Heart Church is a stunning historic Catholic church located nearby the beach front of Semaphore. It’s a huge church with ample room for hundreds of people and even enough room for me as a wedding photographer to walk about and not get in anyone’s way – despite the Priest’s concerns 😛 Katie and Jakob’s ceremony was a traditional Catholic one, taking around 50 minutes to complete finishing with the two of them walking back down the aisle while hugging and kissing everyone on the way out.

Glamour Photos

For glamour photos, I was super excited to hear that Katie had booked the Semaphore Merry-go-round for a photo session! I had always wanted to shoot a wedding there, and I enjoyed myself immensely! We also used the Semaphore jetty onf beachfront of course, while also venturing to the famed Crozier Street Wool sheds in Port Adelaide for a more industrial look – just to add variety to their photos. During their reception the most incredible sunset appeared over the Semaphore foreshore so both myself and their videographer had an absolute ball capturing them in front of it!

The Palias Wedding Reception

The Palais on the Semaphore foreshore was the venue for Katie and Jakob’s wedding reception. I love this place, it’s a beautifully cozy half tent, half shed area dressed up as a lovely event hall suitable for mid to large parties. A live band was on site and the entire night was a blast to be a part of due to their fun loving guests!

Best man speech basics

Best man speech basics

The Best Man speech can quite often make or break a wedding reception, and in some ways puts a huge amount of pressure on the person selected to deliver the speech. The general goal of the modern best man speech is of course to summarise the day, thank the guests and make as much fun of the groom as possible. As the Best Man is usually a good friend of the Groom, this shouldn’t be much of a problem, the Best Man usually draws ideas for jokes from embarrassing stories experienced together as friends, while (depending on the wedding) keeping it child friendly.

The Best man historically is one of the most important people at a wedding and it’s his speech that really tops off the whole day. It’s for this reason that our friends over at Loyes Diamonds have put together this amazing infographic to help out with the basics of writing your Best Man speech. It should also help out with any kind of public speaking you might have to do, and don’t think this advice is exclusive to the Best man, the Maid of Honour and others like the Parents of the bride and groom might find this information very useful.

Man giving speech at formal event with exposed brick walls.
Man in navy suit gives a confident speech at a formal indoor event with exposed brick walls and elegant decor.

It takes a special kind of person to come up with some of the best Best Man speeches, and I’m sure that whomever you have chosen to be yours are well up to the task, before you place them in front of youtube to research funny jokes and what’s already been done, have them read through this infographic to come up with their own ideas first, and then resort to youtube if need be 🙂 Seriously, I’ve been to over a hundred weddings now as a wedding photographer and I’m not joking when I say that 80% of speeches use the same jokes 🙂

This isn’t bad, but originality is a big asset to a good Best Man speech.

Here are some best man speech basics
