Botanic Park’s got this laid-back, yet absolutely stunning vibe with its huge trees and wide-open spaces. Talk about birthday goals—Dahlia’s first was set to be epic with a capital E. Not only did she get her own personal photoshoot in one of the prettiest spots in Adelaide, but she was also zoo-bound later. That’s how you celebrate turning one in style! Dahlia, with her infectious smile and curious eyes, was living her best life, soaking in all the attention and love.
Her folks brought along this adorable collection of stuffed animals, thinking they’d be the perfect props. But Dahlia? She was all about those ibises wandering around, which was hilarious and so darn cute. It’s those unexpected moments that really make a photoshoot. And the teepee they set up? Absolute genius. It looked so cozy and cute sitting there among the trees, with Dahlia peeking out and the sunlight just pouring in. Talk about picture-perfect.

As a family photographer, I’ve had the joy of capturing many precious moments, but this Hove Beach Family Shoot stands out as a particularly delightful experience. I joined Brett and his lovely family for an unforgettable day at Hove Beach, on the southern shore of Adelaide. The initial plan was to use a local park in Aberfoyle Park, but we quickly switched gears to the stunning seaside setting, due to the untrimmed grass at the park.
The beach provided a magnificent backdrop for this family gathering. The sun cast a golden glow over the scene, enhancing the natural beauty and warmth of the day. It’s not every day you get to work with such a cooperative and spirited group. We started with large group shots, which was a fantastic way to get everyone involved right from the start. The energy was infectious as family members laughed and chatted, bringing a genuine feel to each photo.

Transitioning between the large group shots and the smaller, intimate ones for each family group was seamless. The beautiful thing about Hove Beach is its versatility as a photography location – it’s equally stunning for grand, sweeping group photos as it is for those close, tender moments between couples and their children. This flexibility made the shoot not just a job for me, but an adventure in capturing a range of emotions and connections.
One of the most memorable aspects of the day was contending with the beach’s popularity. It was a beautiful day, and quite understandably, Hove Beach was buzzing with activity. The Children
The children were absolutely the stars of the show of this Hove Beach Family Shoot!. Their energy and unfiltered joy were contagious, bringing a lively and playful dynamic to the shoot. Watching them run around in the sand, the little boy wasnt so sure about everything, but his big sister made sure he was a part of everything. Capturing these candid moments of them playing, their faces lit up with genuine happiness, was a highlight of the day.

The decision to choose Pt Noarlunga beach was thoughtful, considering the accessibility for grandma and grandpa. The proximity to the boat ramp made it easier for them to be close to the water, an aspect that added a serene backdrop to our photoshoot. Under the jetty, we found ourselves in a different world – the crisscrossing wooden beams above created a beautiful pattern, adding a unique texture to the pictures. It was like capturing moments in a hidden treasure of Adelaide.

Photographing each individual family, the kids together, and the parents, I witnessed the bond that tied them all together. The laughter, the shared glances, and the unspoken love were palpable. It was fascinating to see how each family had its own dynamic and personality, which I aimed to bring out in each photograph. The children, especially, were a delight to work with. The two older boys had a spark of creativity in them. They wanted to incorporate a bit of fantasy into their shoot. And what better way to do this than with a Star Wars-themed lightsaber duel? The boys brandished their imaginary lightsabers, and with a bit of post-production magic, I brought their battle to life. These moments of playful imagination are what make family shoots so special – they’re not just about capturing faces but also about capturing spirits and dreams.

Of course, every shoot has its challenges. The bright sun, while perfect for a day out, can be a photographer’s nemesis. Squinting eyes are often unavoidable, but with a bit of positioning and timing, I managed to capture everyone with their best, sun-kissed faces forward. The key, I find, in such situations is to keep the mood light and fun. It’s amazing how a good laugh can relax the eyes and bring out natural smiles.
Building a rapport with a family you’ve just met is no small feat, especially when you’re seen as the “wierdo” with the camera. But, part of the joy in what I do lies in breaking down those initial barriers. By engaging with the family, cracking jokes, and sometimes making a fool of myself, I ensure everyone feels comfortable. It’s these little moments of connection that allow me to capture the family in their most natural and relaxed state.

Alongside the classic maternity photos, this session was sprinkled with beautiful traditional elements. As a photographer, these moments speak volumes, adding depth and stories to every frame.
One particular moment that stood out was the delicate New Zealand greenstone pendant, a symbolic piece for the wee one on the way. Its rich green colour stood out beautifully against the earthy tones of Mt Crawford, adding a touch of cultural significance to our shoot.
And then there were the clapping sticks and the traditional wooden bowl. Each element told a story of heritage, of traditions passed down generations, and of a future filled with promise and legacy. These unique touches made this Maternity Shoot resonate on a different level.

The entire shoot was a joy to be a part of, and to be invited back into Natasha and Jonathan’s lives, after their wedding and now for such an intimate moment, is truly a blessing. It’s moments like these that make being a photographer a dream come true.
It was that time of year again where I get to head out for a bit of a Family Photoshoot with the Shaw Family! This time we head out to the lovely little Fountain Valley Reserve, just off South Road in Happy Valley.
It’s fun that Miranda and Jake shooce to head to different spots each year to get a bit of variety in their yearly family photos! Last year we were in a pine forest, and the time prior, another small park in Happy Valley.
This time their choice was the Fountain Valley reserve which at this time of year boasts a bubbling brook streaming through some delightful weeping willows and lots of long, lush grass. I had a lot of fun at their Fountain valley Reserve Family Shoot! The light in the morning was beautiful combined with the natural beauty of the place made my job pretty simple!
