The gardens surrounding Partridge House were perfect for those romantic, leafy moments. Their day was effortlessly stylish and completely true to them, starting from the moment I arrived at Hillary’s parents’ estate just outside Mount Barker. Nestled amongst vibrant foliage, their home looked like a quaint little castle tucked away in the woods – think classic stonework, turrets, and perfectly manicured gardens glowing in the morning light.
The original plan was to keep everything simple, but standing in that storybook setting, we all couldn’t help but joke that they could have just hosted the whole celebration right there – if only there had been more parking! That said, their choice of Howard Vineyard was a stunner and brought the same elegance and warmth as the estate did earlier in the day. The balance of rustic charm and rolling vineyard views gave the perfect backdrop to an already emotional and joy-filled day.
Preparation
Simon and the boys took over the downstairs of the estate in the morning, turning it into a hive of activity. Ties were tied, cufflinks fumbled, and jokes flew around faster than the champagne corks. It was clear from the get-go that his groomsmen were on a mission – keeping nerves at bay and ensuring Simon’s smile didn’t leave his face. And honestly, it worked. Even with the anticipation building, Simon was cool, calm, and radiating that mix of excitement and love that only comes with knowing the best day of your life is about to unfold.
The soft light coming through the cottage windows gave everything a cinematic quality, from the final touch of his jacket to the deep breath he took before heading outside for the first look. It was easy to forget we still had a whole wedding to get to – the vibe here was already magical.

First Look Photoshoot
Hillary and Simon chose to share a private first look before the ceremony, and it could not have been sweeter. On the pathway leading to the grand front door, with warm autumn leaves crunching underfoot, they saw each other for the first time. Howard Vineyard Wedding Ceremony
Their Howard Vineyard wedding ceremony took place beneath the enormous tree out the front of the main reception hall – a natural canopy that filtered the sunlight perfectly. With the sun dipping low behind the hills, a soft lens flare streamed through the branches, dancing behind Hillary as she stood opposite Simon. The light framed her like a halo.
The ceremony began in the most fun way – with a kiss! They didn’t waste time, wanting guests to snap those early moments before the more heartfelt part of the ceremony unfolded. Their celebrant wove stories of their life together, from late-night video games in Korea to settling back into Adelaide with creativity and care at the centre of their relationship. Everyone was completely swept up in the laughter, the emotion, and the gentle wind rustling the vineyard leaves behind them.

Since we had taken plenty of portraits earlier in the day at the estate, our glamour session at Howard Vineyard was short but sweet. The late golden hour was still lingering as we ventured into the vineyard rows for some relaxed shots with the bridal party. The contrast of the Australia bush against Hillary’s crisp white dress and the soft navy tones of Simon’s suit made every frame pop.

The Howard Vineyard wedding reception space was absolutely glowing. Fairy lights hung like stars from the ceiling, bouncing off polished wine glasses and the delicate table settings that nodded to Hillary’s creative flair. Between the hilarious speeches and the heartfelt first dance, the room buzzed with energy. Hillary – being a fellow photographer – had a keen eye for moments, and she’d clearly planned her day around good light and even better vibes. Safe to say it paid off in spades.

To cap it all off, Hillary and Simon made their exit under a tunnel of sparklers held by cheering guests. We’d previously met up for photos at Himeji Gardens, but this time she was hoping for something a little closer to her parents’ place fin Parkside, just south of the Adelaide city center. The idea was to make it simple and easy for everyone. Ironically, they still ended up at Himeji Gardens first out of habit! A quick redirection and we were all reunited at a gorgeous little Parkside spot, ready for some relaxed and fun family photos.
The newest star of the shoot? Their adorable baby boy—snuggled up in the coziest outfit, complete with a tiny beanie that was almost too cute to handle. Even though the breeze had a bit of a bite, he was toasty and content, surrounded by doting parents and grandparents. Family shoots like these are always so heartwarming, especially when there’s a new baby involved. There’s a kind of joy and quiet excitement that bubbles just under the surface—you can feel how much this little bundle means to everyone.

The autumn leaves were just starting to carpet the grass, so we made the most of the golden tones. After scouting a lovely open area in Parkside, we settled in for the shoot. It’s amazing how just a few trees in the right light can feel like you’re in the middle of a magical woodland scene. The little guy wasn’t quite old enough to sit on his own yet, but with a bit of clever camera trickery (and some Photoshop wizardry later on), I made it look like he was having his own mini moment perched among the leaves.
Group photos are always a must in sessions like this—every combo imaginable! Grandparents with the baby, parents with the baby, siblings, couples, whole family together—each one capturing a slightly different connection. I like to keep the pace easy and natural, giving everyone space to be themselves. Even if not everyone loves the camera, there’s always a way to coax out the real smiles. And Cristina’s family? Just lovely. Everyone was patient, kind, and ready to go with the flow.

Grandparents, Giggles and Golden Light
We snapped a few quick shots with the grandparents before they wisely decided to head home—it was getting a bit chilly, and they’d braved enough of the fresh air to last a week. They were absolute troopers though, and you could tell how much they loved being part of these memories. After that, we had the whole park to ourselves. It was that perfect time of afternoon when the light softens and glows, and the world feels calm. As the session wound down, there was one last family member to include: the dog! I always love when families bring their pets along—it just adds another layer of personality to the shoot. This pup was more than happy to make a cameo. Tail wagging, curious sniffs, and a few enthusiastic zoomies later, we got a handful of sweet shots of the whole crew together.
Including pets in family photos is a beautiful way to round out the story. They’re often the ‘first baby’ before little humans come along, and they’re such a big part of the family dynamic. This one brought just the right energy to the last part of the shoot—playful but still totally in tune with the family vibe.

Kaleb had seen one of my previous proposal shoots at Thorngrove Manor and reached out, full of ideas, excitement, and nerves (all the best ingredients for a great proposal). While Thorngrove initially had his heart, he eventually settled on The Manor Basket Range, drawn in by its regal stonework and that fountain that looks like it belongs in a romance novel.
After a few back-and-forth chats, we picked a quiet Friday afternoon – no wedding booked, no crowds (well, almost). The plan was in place: Kaleb would get down on one knee in front of the fountain, with the grand castle keep towering just behind them. The timing? Just right. The light was soft, the weather was playing nice, and the anticipation was real. I’d tucked myself out of sight like a photography ninja, waiting for the moment, heart thumping almost as hard as his probably was.
The Manor Basket Range Proposal
Now, as calm as everything looks in the final photos, there’s always a bit of chaos behind the scenes – and that’s half the fun. Just before Kaleb made his move, a handful of random folks wandered out of the manor. Turns out they were prepping for a wedding happening the next day and had zero idea they were about to photobomb a life-changing moment. One couple even took a casual loop around the fountain right before the big question – you truly can’t plan this stuff. But Kaleb kept his cool like a pro, waited for the perfect moment, and dropped to one knee just as the coast cleared.
And Mel’s reaction? Immediate joy. She said yes with the kind of happy disbelief that makes your cheeks hurt from smiling. No hesitation, just pure excitement and love. As a photographer, moments like that are the golden ticket. You only get one chance to capture it right – that mix of surprise, emotion, and sheer magic. It’s the kind of moment you replay over and over when editing, just grinning the whole time. Kaleb absolutely nailed the timing, and Mel’s sparkle wasn’t just from the ring.

Once the proposal nerves had settled and the ring was firmly on Mel’s finger (with a whole lot of admiring from all angles), we wandered off to explore the grounds.
