Annie Reserve in Happy Valley Family Shoot

Annie Reserve, Happy Valley Family Shoot

It’s so much fun to shoot the same family as I have done in the past to see how the little members of the family are growing up. In this case I head out for a Happy Valley Family Shoot with Miranda and Jake to celebrate little Hadley’s second birthday, just as I had done a year prior for Hadley’s first birthday!

Miranda told me that having family portraits done at about the same time each year was a bit of a family tradtion in her household, and she wanted to continue it which I think is fantastic! Especially consdiering the benefit for children seeing their family portraits hanging on the walls around their house.

Taking photos during the winter months makes things easy in a lot of ways as a photographer – as the sun is usually not casting overly glaring shadows on faces, and the colours of the surrounding nature really comes alive. In the case of Annie Reserve for this Happy Valley family Shoot, we were also treated to a well stocked creek with running water that little Hadley thought was amazing!

We began the shoot rather early in the morning which further enhanced the fact that there were no harsh shadows anywhere, and also allowed for that magical feeling you can get walking through a park like Annie Reserve on a cold winter’s morning.

We made good use of the running creek, the beautiful trees and even the rocky outcrops dotting the shoreline throughout the park for some lovely photos I hope the family cherish forsever!

Bridal Portrait – What Are They and Do You Need Them

  • Bride walking towards her wedding dress

Bridal Portrait Sessions

If you’re getting married soon, first of all, congratulations! It’s a big day and there’s so much that goes on leading up to it. One of the best parts is getting to wear your dream dress. However, if your game plan is to get photos of yourself in it on the actual wedding day, you should rethink that. One of the best ways to preserve the memory of yourself in your dress is to find wedding photographers in Hobart and get bridal portraits done.

Bridal Portrait Sessions – What Are They and Do You Need Them

What is a bridal portrait?

Bridal portraits are a lesser-known sub-section of wedding photography. Typically, brides will put on their dress, get all dolled up, and have a solo photoshoot taken at their ideal location. The portrait prints resulting from this photo session will make lovely gifts that the wife can give to her spouse and/or parents. It can also serve as decor for the reception by way of creative displays.

The time spent on having a bridal portrait done often coincides with a ‘makeup trial’ and can be used to get used to wearing in your wedding shoes, and feeling out your wedding dress – often with friends and family so you can bounce ideas off one another.

What are the benefits of taking a bridal portrait?

Having bridal portraits taken are undeniably another add-on and extra expense. The advantages far outweigh these factors, however.

  • Not time-pressed

No matter how well your wedding is planned or how perfectly it’s meant to flow, stress and even chaos can manifest on the day itself. Bridal portraits on the day itself are usually taken under some kind of time constraint. This is understandable since the wedding day can be pretty jam-packed as it is.

When photos of the bride are only taken on the wedding day, it’s usually during tight pockets of time: before the reception, before you leave for the ceremony or even while the couple photos are being taken. On-site same-day bridal portraits can make you stressed out and feel a little rushed. At the end of it, you might not have the most ideal photos in order to immortalise how you look.

However, when you opt to have a bridal portrait session, you won’t be under a time constraint, you won’t be rushing to head elsewhere, and your creativity can manifest all the way to entire set-ups.

  • A chance to get creative

It should be noted that bridal portraits aren’t strictly constrained to you in your wedding dress. Aside from any formal shots, you’ll be able to express yourself in more casual, fun ways. If you have any furry friends, for example, you can get photos of yourself with your beloved pet. Some brides even go as far as taking boudoir photos, making for a great personalised surprise wedding gift for their soon to be spouse.

When you set aside time to get bridal portraits done, you open yourself up to a world of creative possibilities. It also gives you far more flexibility and far less stress on the wedding day itself.

Bridal portraits are an excellent choice to make for any bride-to-be – of course it doesnt have to be limited to the female side of things though! All the benefits of bridal portraits can also just as easliy apply to the Men.

Whether you’re doing it to preserve your look in your dream dress, to express yourself in certain ways for a gift to your spouse or both, it’s a fantastic experience and keepsake. It allows you to be far less stressed out or rushed during your actual wedding day itself, much in the same way an engament shoot can too, without the addition of your future spouse.

5 Simple Tips for Getting the Best Wedding Photos

  • bride and groom in the water

Some Tips for Getting the Best Wedding Photos

Your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event, which is why it’s important to capture every moment of your special day in the best possible way. Hiring skilled wedding photographers allows you to preserve those memorable moments and share them with future generations.

Your photographers may have the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to turn your vision into reality and tell your love story through high-quality images. However, you and your significant other may be unknowingly making mistakes that can ruin the quality of your wedding photos. Try these tips for getting the best wedding photos on your big day!

5 Effective Tips for Getting the Best Wedding Photos

  • Hide cables, microphones, and speakers

A sound system is essential for your celebrant on your big day, especially during the exchange of wedding vows. Ask the team you hired to set it up discreetly and keep unsightly cables, cords, and speakers out of sight to ensure they are not in your shots.

Additionally, keeping the sound system out of the way can get tricky at times. This is especially true if they are directly behind you during the ceremony. You can cover them up, so they don’t stand out in your wedding photos. The same tip is useful for things like garbage bins, signs, etc that cannot be moved.

  • Don’t be a director

Professional photographers have years of experience in the industry. You may tell them how you envision your photos, but don’t instruct them how to take them. They know what they are doing, so trust them and let them do what they do best. Just relax, be yourselves, and go with the flow. This way, you can have an enjoyable shooting experience and increase your chances of getting the perfect wedding shots that mirror your love story.

  • Ask your guests to refrain from using their own equipment to shoot

Did you know that your friends and family members can easily ruin your wedding photos? This dilemma usually happens when their selfie sticks, cameras, phones, and other gadgets hinder your professional photographers from capturing your best photos.

As a preventive measure, ask your guests to refrain from using their own equipment to shoot during the ceremony. It may disappoint them, but assure them that they can have their photos taken by the professional photographers you hired. This is what’s recently come to be known as an ‘unplugged’ wedding ceremony.

  • Empty your pockets

Your wedding day is when you supposedly look and feel your best. Don’t let your photos get ruined by a pocket bulge by placing your keys, phone, wallet, and other valuables in a safe area or entrusting them to your trusted friend or family member. This tip is also applicable to your guests, so make sure to ask those with pocket bulges to empty their pockets.

  • Opt for easy-to-eat meals

Tasty dishes make any celebration more special, but food stains can easily ruin your photos and mood during the wedding. When selecting the meals and refreshments for your big day, go for options that are easy to eat, especially if you are having an outdoor wedding instead of a formal sit-down meal. This way, you can prevent stained outfits and help everyone look pleasant and confident in photos.

Moments may be fleeting, but you can capture all the sights and sounds during one of the most unforgettable days of your life by immortalising them through photos. Once you have booked your photographers and feel like you are all set for your wedding, make sure to follow the tips for getting the best wedding photos listed above to enjoy having wedding photos you will cherish for years to come.

Guide on How to Take the Best Wedding Family Photos

How to Take the Best Wedding Family Photos

Take the Best Wedding Family Photos

Wedding photography is not as cut-and-dry as people think. Besides being excellent at using lighting and thinking about composition, wedding photographers must also deal with your family dynamics & politics, understanding your wedding day timeline, and scouting the locations of your programme. Here are five tips to ensure that things run smoothly during your big day.

How to Take the Best Wedding Family Photos

Clarify the Schedule of the Family Photos

Traditionally, photographers shoot wedding family photos directly after the ceremony. Sometimes, brides would like family portraits before the reception starts. If you want to organise this activity at other times, you have to tell your photographer and your guests. In some cultures, the couples invite their extended family to the preparations on the day of the ceremony – well before the ceremony. This provides your wedding photographer with more material and allows them to take candid shots of your family.

Inform Your Family of the Photoshoot Venue

Bringing your guests and family outdoors will help utilise the natural light, which can create better images depending on the day. Before the ceremony day, you should agree with your photographer on the venue of the family photos. If you would like the ceremony hall, the temple, or the church as the backdrop, your suppliers may have to bring in special lighting to make the photos brighter for the best wedding family photos.

Also, don’t stray too far from the ceremony venue for the photos. If there is a gorgeous lagoon or a garden on the grounds, but it’s a bit of a walk away, you could probably arrange for a photoshoot with you and your spouse only. Your wedding party might have seniors; even a short trek to a different spot might tire them out quickly.

I usually opt to have a photo done of your entire congregation done first – usually using a drone from the air before breaking up nearby for family photos.

Do Not Keep the Photoshoot Going Forever

Typically, family photoshoots last anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes . An extravagant wedding with many guests from other regions or countries might take longer; family photos for parties with upwards of 500 guests might take an hour! Whether you have an intimate or a grand celebration, though, it is best to keep the photoshoot as short as possible.

It’s a good idea to figure out what groups need to be done in a formal manner, while selecting certain groups which may be better done informally at the reception.

Know What to Expect During the Photo Sessions

Unless you specify something with your wedding photographer, I always try to run family photo sessions in a predictable way. First, the wedding photographer will adjust to the light and take test shots of you mingling with relatives and friends. Then, they will ask people to approach you and your spouse in batches. Typically elderly and kids go first followed by siblings and extended family – try to have your parents go last as they are helpful in rounding up family members.

It’s really important to make a list of family photos you want taken on the day. This does not mean a list of individuals – but a list of groups. For example ‘I want a photo with Bob, Jane and Trent’ is not a list. This is a list –

  1. Bride, Groom, Bob, Trent
  2. Bride, Jane
  3. Bride, Groom, Jane
  4. etc

Notice that Bob, Trent and Jane did not have a photo together? This is because Bob and Trent are estranged from Jane for some reason due to family politics that I simply don’t know as a photographer, so I have to rely on the list you’ve given me. I don’t know what combination of family members you need from your family photos – so to have the best family wedding photos possible, a list is essential.

There is no set combination for wedding photos. Since each event is different, the bride and groom will have various configurations of close friends and family on their special day. What’s important is coordinating with your supplier and telling them who you expect to see in each picture. When you coordinate with your photographer beforehand, you’ll have an easier time on the day and receive the best wedding family photos possible.

Most people would love to reminisce about their wedding through photos and videos of the day. It is nice to see candid, natural shots of preparations and everyone having a great time, but formal shots are still expected at weddings as they are perfect as souvenirs in photo albums. Whether your style is classic and traditional or offbeat and quirky, you’d want a record of one of your happiest days as a couple with the best wedding family photos as possible.

4 Reasons You Will Want to Have a ‘First Look’

  • Wedding first look

Want to Have a ‘First Look’?

During the wedding planning process, there is always one hot topic that the bride and groom will talk about: the ‘first look’. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, a first look is when a bride and groom meet together privately and see each other before the ceremony begins. This is different from the traditional ways, where the couple will only get to see each other during the ceremony.

While some may say a first look is unnecessary and untraditional, some will also claim that it is a must. Regardless of what you may believe, we sometimes suggest that you consider it as there are some compelling reasons why you may want to have a ‘first look’.

4 Reasons You Will Want to Have a ‘First Look’

  1. Your wedding is held during winter

Typically, if you plan to hold the wedding ceremony late into autumn, during winter, or even early spring, you may want to have a first look done. This is because the sun sets quite early, and if you are holding your ceremony later in the afternoon, there will not be any natural light left for the photo-taking session.

As such, a first look early on ensures that you and everyone else will be able to have photos taken using the light still left before it goes below the horizon.

Photos taken during sunset are of course taken at sunset, after the ceremony, but you need not take as long as you usually would due to having had a photoshoot done before your ceremony.

You may have also considered having an engagement shoot done previously also for the same reasons.

  1. The reception follows the wedding immediately

If the reception starts immediately or almost immediately after a wedding, you will want to have a first look session done before the ceremony. Otherwise, you may spend the majority of your time during reception, taking photos rather than enjoying your meal. This is especially true if you also plan to have pictures of friends and family, which reduces even more time for your post-wedding activities.

On top of that, if you are planning to enjoy plenty of cocktails and other drinks during the reception, you may not look at your best after a few. In other words, you may want to have a ‘first look’ as it will ensure you and your partner can have your photos taken before getting busy with the ceremony!

First look
First look
  1. The location of the wedding is far from the reception venue

Many couples hold their reception on the same or near their wedding venue. However, some may hold their reception far away from the ceremony location. If the latter is your case, then it is smart to want to have a ‘first look’ before the ceremony. This way, you do not have to rush around trying to take pictures right after the wedding to give you and the others more time to reach the venue and prepare for a wonderful night. Plus, a first look ensures you get plenty of photos to add to your album, whereas rushing for pictures taken will only significantly limit how many photos you get!

  1. You are afraid of the pressure of your emotions at your ceremony

Perhaps the most common reason why people want to have a ‘first look’ is that they are afraid that the nerves leading up to a traditional ‘first look’ as the bride walks up the aisle may be too much to bear causing ugly crying or other such emotional reactions you may not want to display in front of family and friends.

Having a first look allows you to get these nerves and emotions out of the way before the ceremony thereby lessening the chance of not looking your best during the ceremony.

Grooms first look as she walks towards him
Grooms first look as she walks towards him

If you believe that you will have a rushed photo-taking session due to the tight wedding schedule, then you may want to have a ‘first look’ before the chaos ensues! Sure, the ceremony will be a blast, but you may regret it later when you find out that the resulting photos were not what you expected or that you do not have enough to work with because you didn’t allocate enough time for it.

Save yourself the headache and do a first look if any of the above reasons apply to you, or you simply want to see the love of your life before everyone else!
