Their suite overlooked the misty valleys below, and they were treated to a sunrise that painted the hills in soft pinks and oranges—pure early-morning magic. Before heading to the venue, we used the front of the iconic Mt Lofty House for a few photos. The dappled light streamed through the tall trees surrounding the estate, and the soft shadows played beautifully on Sharon’s dress and Mark’s sharp suit. They’d opted for a first look—a quiet moment shared between the two of them before the official events kicked off.
It was intimate and emotional, the kind of moment that melts any remaining nerves. Sharon’s expression as she turned and saw Mark was pure sunshine. Arriving at Pike and Joyce, we were greeted with that iconic view over the vines. Rows upon rows of grape-laden greenery stretched out below, kissed by the afternoon sun. The setting was perfect—but, as weddings sometimes go, there was a little hiccup. Sharon, who had been keeping the rings safe, had accidentally left them behind.
Luckily, as a wedding photographer, I’ve seen my fair share of last-minute scrambles, and always come prepared. I offered up my own wedding band as a stand-in, and a ladies ring was sourced quickly for Sharon. It ended up being a touching, funny twist that lightened the mood—and one that struck an uncanny resemblance to my own wedding story with my wife Luisa. Talk about serendipity.
The ceremony itself was heartfelt and full of personal touches. A family band provided live music that carried softly on the breeze, and the vows were filled with gentle humour and raw emotion. During the ceremony, guests learned that Sharon had met Mark at his mother’s funeral—a service she had officiated. And with family and friends arriving in black and white hummers, and a reception that featured a live serenade and a bit of surprise silly string, they absolutely nailed it. This wasn’t about the traditions – no first dance, no bouquet toss – it was about connection, celebration, and creating a day that was unmistakably them.
Mel’s Preparation
Mel’s morning unfolded in a picture-perfect bed and breakfast with views that could have been pulled straight from a postcard. Rolling hills, a glimmering pond, and a parade of ducks wandering past the windows – it had a peaceful, countryside charm that balanced the excitement of the day ahead. The bridal party brought the energy. There was dancing in the vineyard rows, playful cuddless on the gravel paths, and plenty of cheeky banter between shots. Mel and Ryan were effortlessly affectionate – their comfort with each other was a dream to document. Back at the reception space, Longview transformed into a cosy gathering spot with fairy lights, rustic charm, and laughter echoing through the halls. The couple kept the styling simple – letting the natural beauty of the venue shine through – and focused more on the vibe than the frills. And wow, did the vibe deliver.
Our photobooth was up and running all night, packed with guests donning ridiculous props and pulling faces. The audio guestbook added a sentimental twist – heartfelt messages and hilarious advice recorded for Mel and Ryan to replay in years to come. But the real showstopper? One of Mel’s bridesmaids surprised everyone by singing a tear-inducing tribute to the newlyweds. The room went from wild to silent in an instant, every guest holding their breath as her voice filled the space with love.
Then came a surprise no one was ready for – a cheeky South African tradition courtesy of Ryan’s side. Mid-speech, just as he was getting all sentimental, he was ambushed with a barrage of silly string. Cue uproarious laughter and a very sticky groom. He took it like a champ, of course – and probably still found bits of it in his hair days later.

The reception took place in one of Seppeltsfield’s impressive barrel rooms, a grand space lined with towering wine barrels. Thankfully, large industrial fans kept the room (large shed) comfortable, allowing the celebration to unfold in a relaxed and lively atmosphere. The decor embraced the winery’s natural charm, with rustic wooden tables, glowing fairy lights, and an earthy colour palette that echoed the surrounding vineyards.
The speeches were a highlight of the night, each one filled with heartfelt anecdotes, humour, and well-wishes. A standout moment was one speech delivered entirely in the style of a horse racing announcer, a hilarious nod to the couple’s passion for the sport. The couple also played the ever-entertaining shoe game, providing plenty of laughs as they revealed their perspectives on married life’s little quirks.
As the evening progressed, we stole away for some sunset portraits amongst the vines. The golden light draped them in the most romantic glow, highlighting the quiet joy of the moment. With the Barossa hills stretching into the distance, it was the perfect way to capture the magic of their day.
