From the very beginning, Mel and Ryan’s focus was clear – they just wanted to enjoy the day with the people they loved. And with family and friends arriving in black and white hummers, and a reception that featured a live serenade and a bit of surprise silly string, they absolutely nailed it. This wasn’t about the traditions – no first dance, no bouquet toss – it was about connection, celebration, and creating a day that was unmistakably them.
Mel’s Preparation
Mel’s morning unfolded in a picture-perfect bed and breakfast with views that could have been pulled straight from a postcard. Rolling hills, a glimmering pond, and a parade of ducks wandering past the windows – it had a peaceful, countryside charm that balanced the excitement of the day ahead. The star of the home, though, had to be the oversized bay window. With soft natural light pouring in, it created a magical setting for Mel’s getting-ready photos.

While the girls sipped bubbly and posed in the bay window, Ryan and his crew were kicking back at another nearby bed and breakfast – a bit less glam, a bit more “let’s get these photos done so we can get to the good part.” And honestly? That vibe was perfection.

After the ceremony, we took a wander around Longview’s beautiful grounds with the bridal party. From the iconic tree-lined driveway that sweeps into the estate to the golden grass-covered hills and neat rows of vines, it was a photographer’s dream. The lighting was divine, and the wind added a little extra drama to every dress swish and jacket flick.
The bridal party brought the energy. There was dancing in the vineyard rows, playful cuddless on the gravel paths, and plenty of cheeky banter between shots. Mel and Ryan were effortlessly affectionate – their comfort with each other was a dream to document. Back at the reception space, Longview transformed into a cosy gathering spot with fairy lights, rustic charm, and laughter echoing through the halls. The couple kept the styling simple – letting the natural beauty of the venue shine through – and focused more on the vibe than the frills. And wow, did the vibe deliver.
Our photobooth was up and running all night, packed with guests donning ridiculous props and pulling faces. The audio guestbook added a sentimental twist – heartfelt messages and hilarious advice recorded for Mel and Ryan to replay in years to come. But the real showstopper? One of Mel’s bridesmaids surprised everyone by singing a tear-inducing tribute to the newlyweds. The room went from wild to silent in an instant, every guest holding their breath as her voice filled the space with love.
Then came a surprise no one was ready for – a cheeky South African tradition courtesy of Ryan’s side. Mid-speech, just as he was getting all sentimental, he was ambushed with a barrage of silly string. Cue uproarious laughter and a very sticky groom. He took it like a champ, of course – and probably still found bits of it in his hair days later.

Alongside the digital captures of the day, we had the vintage Super8 camera rolling – bringing that nostalgic, home-movie touch to Mel and Ryan’s story. The morning sun filtered gently through the tall trees, creating a dreamy glow that danced across the boys’ faces as they dashed from one patch of grass to the next. Their joyful shrieks bounced through the park as they kicked a well-loved soccer ball around – though it didn’t take long before the ball made a splashy detour into the water. That just made everyone laugh even harder, and the boys were more than happy to play the role of fearless explorers.
Photographing young kids always brings a beautiful unpredictability, and rather than trying to keep everything still and posed, we embraced their energy completely. We turned the shoot into a mini-adventure, with climbing trees, exploring the garden’s nooks and crannies, and even a leaf-collecting challenge thrown in for good measure. One of the reasons I adore doing Veale Gardens family photography is how the location almost becomes a character in the shoot itself. The Veale gardens are layered with tiny details that light up kids’ imaginations – waterfalls, hidden alcoves, gentle creeks, and those oh-so-inviting stepping stones. It was like this magical maze for the boys, and they were absolutely living their best life.
As we wandered deeper into the gardens, the boys made it their personal mission to discover every rock, puddle, and interesting stick they could find. Their parents were all in too – running, chasing, laughing right alongside them. It was beautiful to witness and even more heartwarming to capture. I’m a big believer that the best family photos come from real moments, not stiff poses, and this shoot was bursting with the kind of authentic connection that makes images come alive.

Of course, there were those quiet moments too – a hand-holding walk down a tree-lined path, cuddles under a shady canopy, and shared glances that said everything without a word. But the soccer ball was definitely the unexpected star of the morning. Whether it was being dribbled, chased, or dramatically saved from a watery end, it brought so much joy and became the perfect icebreaker for getting natural smiles out of the boys.

Capturing Real Moments That Matter
What really made this session special was how deeply connected this family was. The laughter came easily, the hugs were tight, and every interaction felt real. At one point, the boys sat together on a low tree branch, arms around each other, mid-laugh – a spontaneous moment that became one of my favourite images from the day. Their parents stood behind them, beaming with that kind of proud, “this is our whole world” kind of love. Veale Gardens gave us the perfect stage, and this family filled it with so much heart.

By the end of our time together, the boys were ready for a break, out of breath, and grinning from ear to ear. Their parents looked equally joyful (and maybe just a little relieved no one had actually gone swimming in the ponds). It was one of those shoots where the time flew, the light was perfect, and every click of the shutter captured something real.

From the breezy shores of Henley Beach to the vibrant urban scenes of Port Adelaide, their energy and creativity shone through, culminating in breathtaking shots on the surreal salt flats of Bumbunga Lake.
The choice of locations was a blend of urban charm and natural beauty. From windswept shores to historic streets, each backdrop added a different flavour to their session. The final stop at Bumbunga Lake in South Australia’s north gave the shoot an ethereal finish. While the lake wasn’t at its most vibrant pink, its endless white salt flats and surreal atmosphere provided an unforgettable setting.

The day kicked off at Henley Beach, right by the jetty. Bright sunshine reflected off the water, making for a stunning natural light setup. The wind, however, had its own plans. Tina and Eric came prepared with an array of balloons, which quickly turned into playful props caught in the breeze. Controlling them was a hilarious challenge, but the results were fantastic—dynamic, spontaneous, and full of life.
Once the balloons were wrangled, attention turned to the jetty’s underside, a favourite spot for moody and dramatic shots. The combination of wooden beams, shifting tides, and soft shadows created a striking contrast to the earlier lighthearted frames. Walking along the shoreline, the couple enjoyed some quiet moments, letting the sea and sky provide a natural, timeless setting for their love to shine.

Crozier St Photoshoot
To escape the relentless wind, the next stop was Crozier Street, an industrial gem tucked away in Adelaide. This grungy urban location, famous for its appearances in films like Mortal Kombat, offered a completely different aesthetic. Textured walls, rusted doors, and weathered bricks set the stage for an edgy, cinematic feel.
Unfortunately, being a Friday, the typically photogenic walls were partially hidden by parked cars from the surrounding businesses. That didn’t stop the magic. By shifting perspectives, framing shots creatively, a touch of photoshop and making use of the alleys and side streets, the shoot still captured that signature industrial charm. The contrast between the raw urban elements and Tina’s elegant outfit made for a striking visual narrative.

The grand finale of the day was the much-anticipated Bumbunga Lake photoshoot. Known for its vibrant pink hues when conditions are just right, the lake wasn’t displaying its famous colour this time. But that hardly mattered. The vast, salt-covered landscape stretched endlessly, offering a minimalist dreamscape perfect for unique, otherworldly shots.
The balloons made a comeback, dancing against the clear blue sky and adding a pop of colour to the stark surroundings. The couple’s silhouettes against the lake’s reflective surface created breathtaking compositions. The highlight, however, was the quirky and beloved Lake Monster sculpture. With its whimsical presence, it added a fun and unexpected twist to the shoot, making for some truly unforgettable images.

St Laurence’s Catholic Church in North Adelaide is a sight to behold. The grandeur of its vaulted ceilings, warm wooden tones, and intricate stained glass makes it one of my favorite churches in the city. As guests arrived, the atmosphere inside was reverent yet filled with eager anticipation.
Patrick stood at the altar, looking dapper in his suit, exchanging glances with his groomsmen while nervously adjusting his cuffs. As the harp music swelled, Nikita made her entrance, escorted by her father, her veil flowing gracefully behind her.
The ceremony followed the structure of a traditional Catholic mass, complete with heartfelt readings, solemn vows, and communion offered to all guests. There was a palpable sense of devotion in the air, each moment steeped in meaning. The couple’s exchange of rings, a symbolic and sacred gesture, was met with quiet smiles and glistening eyes from the pews. With the ceremony concluded, we set off for some breathtaking portrait shots around Adelaide. First stop—Light’s Point, overlooking the city skyline and the iconic Adelaide Oval. This spot was chosen with Patrick’s love for sports in mind, a nod to his passion woven seamlessly into their wedding memories. The light here was exquisite, bouncing off the Moreton Bay fig trees, creating dappled patterns on the ground and naturally framing the couple in a way that felt cinematic.
From there, we ventured to North Terrace, a staple location for Adelaide wedding photography. The historic architecture, stately columns, and warm sandstone provided a stunning contrast against Nikita’s flowing gown and Patrick’s sharp suit. They twirled on the steps of Bonython Hall, shared quiet moments beneath the archways, and let the city become part of their story. As the sun began its descent, the golden hour glow wrapped around them, highlighting every soft touch and stolen glance.
