5 Ways to Find An Excellent Photographer for Your Wedding

Wedding photos are the best souvenirs on your wedding day. They capture the best and most heart-warming moments on your very special day, and you can look back on them for many years to come.

Of course, you want all of your wedding photos to be perfectly shot and composed so you would have good photos to show to your children and even grandchildren someday. That’s why you need to be meticulous and set high standards when choosing  your photographer for professional wedding photography.

5 Easy Ways to Find An Excellent Photographer for Your Wedding

To help you sort things out, below are five easy ways you can hire an excellent photographer for your wedding.

  1. Decide On Your Style

In the vast and varied industry of professional wedding photography, how would you choose the best one for you? The simple answer is to screen them. One of the most important considerations in choosing your photographer is when you have a distinct photography style in mind. From here, your choices would be trimmed down by many, as you only pick those photographers that mesh with the style that you prefer.

One thing that will help you decide on your style is to gather a collection of wedding photos from the internet by browsing photographer portfolios of weddings they had shot in the past. Choose the ones that appeal to you. Through this gallery of inspiring images, try to analyze the common things among those photos that made you like them.

For instance, they can be a classic style of photography, a formal pose, or maybe a very elegant feel. Discuss with your partner which styles you will feel comfortable with on the day, something that suits your personalities and meets all your aesthetic preferences.

I personally get comments on my own photos where I like to bring the mentality behind my award winning landscape photography into my wedding photography thereby capturing not only the couple, but also the venue which they had spent hours agonising over beforehand!

You don’t even have to limit yourselves to just one style! Many photographers out there are flexible enough to use different techniques for a wedding shoot and creatively put them together in one album. Your wedding photos will be a collaborative effort between you and your photography team, so make sure to emphasize the exact aesthetic that you want to achieve!

  1. Do Your Research on Potential Photographers

After deciding on a specific wedding photography style, you now have only a few photographers to choose from. Take a close look at each of them by browsing their social media pages and official websites. Look through their wedding albums to have an idea of how they capture moments, especially those that are really special to you.

Of course, the photos on full display are their best shots and poses. How about what their previous clients say about them? You should also consider reading customer reviews from reliable sources like ABIA to understand the kind of service they’ve given other couples and events. There may be red flags that you can spot on these reviews that will help you decide easily.

Based on these reviews, what do you think of them now? Are they responsive to queries? Do they deliver as promised? Do you like the way they interact with their clients? Knowing these things, you get a better picture of what services you can expect during your shoot.

Another important factor you should take into account are industry accreditations. Being a photographer does not simply mean someone who owns a camera – however, unfortunately a lot of people seems to think so! There are organisations which can help you find an excellent photographer for your wedding like the AIPP.

  1. Take a Close Look at Previous Work

As mentioned in the second tip, you are free to look at potential photographers’ galleries on their respective websites. However, you should not base your decision solely on their featured albums. What you should do is to ask these photographers for at least a full wedding from one of their previous clients. This will give you a clear picture of what kind of product they deliver. If you see the same quality of images as their online galleries, it means they are genuinely excellent photographers!

A smart idea is to ask your prospective photographers for photos similar to the wedding theme or venue you will have. For instance, you are having a garden wedding. Ask for a wedding album from a previous client that also had a garden themed event. This way, you know exactly what to expect to see for your after-the-wedding photos.

Aside from that, you should also look at each of their photos with a critical eye and be keen on details. Look at the couple’s photos. Does it portray intimacy between them? How about the lighting? Are they too flashy or dim? Take the time to look through the pictures of the couple’s guests, too. Do the photos portray festivity with the subjects projecting emotions—feeling happy, touched, sad, and joyful? These many factors will ensure you will make a thoroughly informed decision in the end.

  1. Assess Their Personalities and See If They Match Yours

It is also essential to work with people you like. Having a good relationship with your photographer will help bring out the best in you during your many shoots. The feeling that you are comfortable posing in front of them and doing as the photographer says makes the job easier and produces better results.

You need to know if your photographer is someone you can comfortably work with. You can easily sense a certain rapport during your conversations. When you give suggestions, how do they respond? Does your photographer look excited and happy when you describe your vision of the photos? Do they insist on what they want or respect what you prefer? Are they always on time?

Look for a photographer with a good demeanour and excellent social graces, someone assertive and who gives instructions respectfully. The photography team should be the friendliest you’ve ever met as you will be smiling all day long during the shoot. Can you still smile when you feel annoyed or embarrassed by your photographer? Of course, you wouldn’t want to work with someone you don’t like.

  1. Weigh Pros and Cons and Choose the Best Offer

This is the time when you put all considerations together and weigh each critical element—proximity, price, package inclusions, and value for money. For instance, you may be confused between choosing a photographer near your area for offering a good set of inclusions in the package and the one that provides the same but at a lower price. You also need to know if photography teams in different territories will ask for additional payments on top of their standard rate in the form of an out-of-town fee.

You may also get offers that go the extra mile by including special effects, additional coverage, or even discounted engagement shoots. Compare their rates and determine which one falls within your budget range. While investing in wedding photography is a good move, spending too much on it is not very practical. You’re better off spending your money on a honeymoon trip or furniture upgrades when you move into your house together.

Choose a package that will cover your wedding day, starting from your preparation up to the last minute of your reception program. Consider the number of good photographers in the team. Is there just one? Some offer two or more excellent photographers to cover your event. Of course, having two is the better option as you get two creative minds and twice the coverage.

5 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn At The Hospital

  • baby ellie on shoudler

Photographing Your Newborn At The Hospital

The birth of a newborn is one of life’s most wondrous moments. Perhaps nothing can compare to the feeling of watching a beautiful smile stretched on a newborn’s face, or the little movements they make. Such special moments bring a sense of love and affection among partners. Therefore, capturing such momentous time becomes imperative.

Looking at the first photo of your newborn can be overwhelming yet exciting. You and your partner would love to share a glimpse of your little one with the world. However, most photographs captured in the hospital end up blurry or not suited for printing and putting on display.

If you want to capture the best baby photographs, consider following our tips for photographing your newborn at the hospital. This article will help you understand how to capture beautiful photographs of a new baby at the hospital.

5 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn At The Hospital

  1. Think about the lighting

When photographing your newborn at the hospital, it’s often the case that lighting in your room isn’t the best. Open all the blinds in the room to let in the natural light. Most photographers understand the importance of natural lightning during a baby shoot because it helps capture some of the best shots. Apart from natural lighting, turn off all the other lights in the room. The combination of natural lighting and artificial lighting can be quite ugly – however this does not mean you can’t experiment. Make the most of this combination to capture the best first newborn photograph.

  1. Plan The Shoot After a Feeding

As much as you want to take out your camera and start capturing every possible moment of a newborn, we recommend you don’t. Birth is tiring for both mom and newborn; giving enough space and time to both can help you capture the best newborn photos with mum. One of the best ways to do this is by planning your shoot after a feeding session. A well-fed baby will be calm, content, and happy. Most newborns are calm right after a feeding session, and they tend to sleep right throughout the photoshoot. Besides, you will be able to capture some adorable shots of newborns dreaming the day away.

Baby Smiles

  1. Basic Clothing

A newborn photoshoot should be comfortable for both the little one and partners. Therefore, we recommend new parents bring an extra pair of basic clothing. You can choose to wear something plain and simple – preferably earth tones or whites – during the shoot. Avoid wearing bold patterns or clothing with big logos as it may cause unnecessary distractions in the photo. The same tip could be applied to the newborn. Choose plain onesies for your baby to let their outfit blend in with the hospital setting.

  1. Choose The Right Angle

Newborn photography is all about angles. Clicking the photograph from the right angle will ensure you achieve the best shot of the newborn and mom. Make sure you position the camera slightly higher so that your angle is not showing up the baby’s nostrils. By doing so, newborns’ nostrils will barely show up, allowing you to achieve beautiful images. If you want to add an extra element to the photograph, consider trying different angles and welcoming new parents in the shoot. Simply keep the right angles in mind.

  1. Focus on Details

For newborn photography, always focus on small details. Consider focusing on capturing their tiny hands, feet, fingers, ears, and cheeks. You can also choose to capture a shot from the top of their head showing small baby hair. New parents love watching through such tiny details of their newborn.

Also consider memorialising the moment with models of your little one’s feet and hands – it can be a lot of fun getting them made and they look amazing on the wall!

Why Group Photos Are a Must for Your Wedding

  • Group of guests

Group Photos Are a Must for Your Wedding

With your wedding in a few weeks, you’re most likely mired in the hardest part of planning for your big day. There’s a lot of pressure to ensure that everything checks out and that you have the most wonderful experience possible.

Whether it’s in the context of catering or last-minute invite additions, the list of concerns may seem nearly endless. There is so much that needs to be done before one of the most special days of your life. As you continue to weigh between outcomes and choices while planning your dream wedding.

There’s one particular dilemma that’s bound to come to mind sooner or later: Should you have planned group photos at your wedding? or should you go through the hassle of planning which group photos you need, and ones you dont?

Here’s a bit of an idea why group photos are a must for your wedding and why the effort should be made to get them right!

Embrace modernity or reject tradition?

Although you may not have paid it much mind at first, the photography aspect of your special day is one that you shouldn’t overlook. In fact, modern wedding photography has evolved far beyond what you usually expect it to be, so you need to make certain decisions early on.

In the past, getting pictures taken at the ceremony and reception was easy to plan as formal wedding shots were a sort of “one-size-fits-all” ordeal. However, wedding photography has evolved leaps and bounds over the years, and photographers are now pushing the creative boundaries of what can be achieved with just a few clicks.

One photo style that has taken weddings by storm is the ever-popular group photo approach which has evolved beyond merely documenting a group of people. At this point, getting more people in a picture is one of the most creative ways that you can document your special day and make unforgettable memories!

So, why should you plan for group photos for your special day?

Group photos make room to mix and match with various styles. When it comes to wedding photography, many people focus on capturing a passionate portrait to hang on the wall. However, you can get so much more with group photos.

Although some professional photographers prefer to be up close and personal with their subjects, group photographs allow for the capture of a family group, or group of friends surrounded by the venue you angonised over choosing due to you liking it’s aesthetic.

While group photos are a must on your big day, the group photos you capture are to be honest often the most boring wedding photos taking on the day, however can be amongst the most cherished as they will capture a snap shot of you with your family on one of the most imporatnt days of your life.

The makeup of that same group may not be the same 10 years from now – which is just the way life goes, for better or worse. It may well be that this group photo may be the only time this particular group were to be captured in a photo together, smiling and happy. Photography is all about capturing memories, and this can be a big one.

Group photos are a great way to capture the atmosphere of a ceremony

This is where group photos come in as a great kind of shot during a wedding day. Whether it’s candid or planned, shots with you and your guests taken by a professional works wonders when it comes to documenting your special day. From your family members and parents to your friends and close acquaintances, they all show the unique atmosphere of your ceremony and transport you back to it every time you look at the photos!

While group photos aren’t the best at ‘living in the moment’ as modern natural wedding phtography is all about – group photos are a must simply for documenting who was at your big day and to capture everyone simply looking like they love each other!

While there are many ways that you can document your special day, nothing can do your wedding more justice than group photos. Once you plan more shots with your loved ones and guests, you won’t have to worry about missing the mark on immortalizing countless memories before, during, and after your ceremony!

6 Things Your Wedding Photographer Might Not Say, But Should

Things Your Wedding Photographer Might Not Say, But Should

When it comes to photography, it’s not easy to be a wedding photographer – there are plenty of astonishing photographers out there that simply won’t touch weddings simply because of the stress that comes along with it. In fact this was precisely how I began as a wedding photographer – a friend of mine didn’t want to do one and palmed it off to me!

Sure, it is often fun and exciting to witness the clients’ happiest day, but it’s not all happy and magical every time. The pressure is on to produce the most fantastic wedding photos because they are going to be lifelong mementos of that very special event.

But some unforeseen circumstances can get in the way of what’s supposed to be a perfect shoot. And sometimes, there are things your wedding photographer might not say.

6 Things Your Wedding Photographer Might Not Say, But Should

Here are some of the things your wedding photographer might not say, but probably won’t.

  1. “If you want the most beautiful and most dramatic shots, have the wedding outdoors.”

Do you want those gorgeous wedding photos posted on social media with dramatic lighting? They’re mostly shot outdoors. Natural lighting is flattering to all skin tones, and elements like the bright blue skies or the glowing sunset make for an amazing backdrop. However, you can’t always get that indoors with artificial light.

The epic wedding photos taken inside that you might love from social media are usually taken at venues that may be out of your budget, and in Australia they tend to be few and far between. That said though if you have the budget, so for it – they can be some very unique shots.

  1. “Please do not look at me or the camera.”

For some studio shots and yearbook photos, the subject is always asked to look straight at the camera and people are trained to do so from a young age. But for engagement and wedding photos, the more candid the images are, the better!

Don’t look at your photographer unless instructed to do so for those traditional portraits, and just interact with your new spouse and all the guests as natural as possible and let the photographer capture those special moments.

  1. “If you want to get the best shots, trust the photographer.”

Couples who get those out-of-this-world wedding shots are the ones who tell their photographers, “We’re down with anything you have in mind.” Granted, that gorgeous wedding dress is probably going to get dirty, but they’ll result in photos you’ll be proud of. They’ll even make the funniest behind the scene stories that you can tell the kids in the future!

  1. “If you see me resting for a bit, it doesn’t mean I’m not doing my job.”

As much as photographers love capturing every moment in a wedding, standing for hours and lugging heavy equipment can drain anyone’s energy. A wedding day is often 10-14 hours long for a wedding photographer which not much of a break, or even food in between.

So, if in between the major parts of the wedding you see the photographer sitting down, know that it’s just a quick break, and rest assured that no heart warming moments will be missed!

  1. “I don’t have the superpower to control the weather.”

If the couple and the entire family are hoping for nice weather on that special day, trust that the photographer does, too. No one wants to have a rainy wedding day, but if that happens, know that photographers are professionals who will still be able to take gorgeous pictures, especially if you’re willing to be more playful and use the rain to your advantage.

Lightning

  1. “I do encourage honest feedback.”

For many months, you and your photographer have been exchanging ideas about how the wedding coverage should be done. Every photo is thoughtfully captured to ensure that it reflects how special those moments are in your life. So, from the time of the delivery of the wedding photos, know that your photographer is waiting for honest feedback.

Do share your thoughts, whether you are ecstatic about them or have some constructive criticisms. As a client, know that your opinion is always valued! It’s a big reason why I run my annual wedding photo of the year contest!

The photographer plays a big role in your wedding, being the person responsible for the highlights of the ceremony and the reception and those sweet and funny, candid moments. And while there are some things your wedding photographer might not say, these are things that should already be known.

Wedding photography is not as simple as you might think; it takes creativity, an innate instinct, and an eye for detail through experience. If you give the photographer the freedom to be as creative as they can, they can surprise their beloved clients with wedding photos that reflect the true beauty of that wonderful day!

If you are looking for wedding photographers you don’t need to look elsewhere. Sven Studios can capture all the best things about your wedding––your special moments, the joy that your loved ones share, and yes, even the emotion that fills the air on your big day. 6 Tips on Preparing for Your Wedding Photographs

  • Putting makeup on

Preparing for Your Wedding Photographs

Let’s face it: not everybody is comfortable posing in front of the camera. Often, we feel too much pressure to look good, especially when we have to take photographs for big events like weddings! It really isn’t the most natural thing in the world – and yet you want to get the most ‘natural’ wedding photos anyway!

To prepare yourself for your wedding photographs on one of the the most emotional days of your life, we’ve compiled a few things to remember before your wedding! Keep reading for a couple of tips on how to pose for your wedding pictures.

6 Tips on Preparing for Your Wedding Photographs

Tip #1: Build Trust with Your Photographer

Partnerships with your wedding suppliers are a must. You have to work with a team that understands how much this big day means to you! Given that, you must build trust with your wedding photographer. Allow them into your own outlook and give them time to understand how you really want to capture moments.

On top of that, make sure that your taste matches their style. Work with them in preparing an engagement shoot or a prenuptial shoot. Explore and run by locations with your photographer to get their opinion. Once you build a unique rapport with your photographer, there’s no doubt that you will achieve your dream photos!

When preparing for your wedding photographs – it obviously stands to reason that you should get along with the person actually taking your photographs!

Tip #2: Pick the Perfect Glam Team

In hiring a hairstylist and a makeup artist for your wedding day, it’s important you assess their skills. These artists should have to not only make you look fabulous as you walk down the aisle, but also make you look fabulous in your wedding photos!

There could be a trial-and-error stage, but the preparations are worth it. Be vocal; say what you want and say what you’re not comfortable with. Let them know their full schedule ahead of time. Remember, the couple to be wed always gets the final say!

One tip in finding the right makeup artists for you is to have a trial run where you may make the most of having makeup done before an engagement shoot – that you will have a much better idea on how your makeup will turn out with your photography from your big day.

Tip #3: Eat Right

What you eat shows up on your skin and face. Make sure you don’t eat too much junk or sodium that will cause you to bloat! Allow yourself a diet that hits all the right food groups, and don’t focus too much on your weight! You are your own worst critic when it comes to this – remind yourself that you are always going to be the most stunning person on your big day!

When you eat right, make sure it’s all about feeling good and getting that healthy glow. This way, you’ll effortlessly look beautiful in all of your shots!

Tip #4: Follow a Night time Routine

Following a night time routine will do wonders for your mind, body, and even skin! In the weeks and nights prior to your wedding, make sure to get lots of rest by sticking to a bedtime.

Stretch before or practice some yoga before hitting the sack. Incorporate beauty tools in your skincare routine. Allow yourself to wind down before sleeping soundly, and then wake up feeling refreshed. You never know, this could even help you after your wedding day!

Tip #5: Be Punctual

If there’s one thing a bride shouldn’t stress on, it would be time. When everyone and everything is on time, things will go smoothly, and there would be no need to rush. So, stick to the itinerary! Get a friend or your Maid-of-Honour to remind everyone of their schedules and know that you’re the boss on the day, and being late yourself is pretty much expected!

Tip #6: Relax and Keep It Natural

Do what feels right with you and your partner. Feel free to explore poses and options and get some inspiration. But then again, don’t feel pressured to replicate the photos and poses from wedding magazines, especially if they’re not something you’d do! Be realistic and make the moment feel as genuine as possible.

If you feel comfortable, your photos will look comfortable. I always try to take my photographs of people actually doing things for this reason – as opposed to turning people into mannequins.

It’s completely normal to sense a little panic the closer the big day arrives. Milestones, after all, need to be captured because these are the memories worth holding onto forever. But at the same time, remember that you are not alone! Once you’ve built a wedding team consisting of your new friends, trusted circle, and family, it all makes preparing for your wedding photographs that much easier.

Are you still looking for a wedding photographer in Adelaide, or the Adelaide Hills? SvenStudios has a team that specialises in the craft of creating the most precious memories of your wedding day, with a wide variety of artistic services at your disposal. We would love to help you in preparing for your wedding photographs! We are just an email or phone call away!
