Proposal at Thorngrove Manor – Lydia & Simon

There are some places in Adelaide that simply feel like they belong in a fairytale, and Thorngrove Manor is one of them. Its whimsical turrets, enchanting gardens, and unmistakable castle-like charm make it the perfect backdrop for a love story that feels larger than life. For Lydia and Simon, this magical setting became the stage for a proposal that was as heartfelt as it was unforgettable.

As a Adelaide wedding photographer, being invited to capture such a personal chapter in a couple’s journey is always special. This proposal at Thorngrove Manor wasn’t just about a ring and a question—it was about months of planning, hidden surprises, and the joy of creating an experience Lydia would never forget. The whole day unfolded like a beautifully written story, with me tucked quietly into the sidelines, trying my best to stay hidden while making sure every priceless reaction was caught on camera.

Prior to the big moment

Simon had been planning his proposal for quite some time. From the very first phone call, his excitement was obvious. He wanted everything to be just right—not only for Lydia to say “yes,” but for the memory to feel deeply personal and filled with their story. He emailed me ideas, lists of props, and detailed run sheets that made it clear this wasn’t just a proposal. It was a love letter brought to life.

On the day, his preparation paid off. A cosy teepee and picnic setup had been carefully arranged on the rear castle lawn, with the help of close friends and family. A video of well wishes from loved ones was queued up and ready to play, adding a heartfelt touch that would bring Lydia to tears.

As if that wasn’t enough, Simon had also prepared a personal serenade, singing to her with all the emotion of the moment, his voice carrying across the lawn and adding yet another layer of intimacy to the proposal. Journey through their Relationship

Every element of Simon’s plan was tied to their history as a couple. He’d asked helpers to create a pathway lined with photographs and paintings—snapshots of milestones, holidays, and everyday moments that reflected their journey together. Each picture told a story, marking the laughter, the adventures, and the little things that had defined their relationship.

Walking down that pathway wasn’t just about leading Lydia to the proposal spot. It was about reliving the years they’d shared, the memories that had shaped them, and the love that had only grown stronger with time. It was such a touching idea to include their story in such a visual way, turning the proposal into something layered with meaning and nostalgia.

Proposal at Thorngrove Manor

The grand finale was waiting in front of the castle keep: a circle arbour dressed with flowers, glowing softly in the fading light. It was here, surrounded by the striking stonework of Thorngrove Manor and the beauty of the arbour, that Simon dropped to one knee. Lydia’s surprise and joy were written across her face, her hands flying to her mouth in disbelief before tears and laughter took over.

Capturing that exact second is always a thrill—the raw emotion, the instant shift in energy, the knowledge that life has just changed forever. For me, the challenge was staying invisible while crouching in gravel that crunched louder than I’d like. There weren’t many places to hide around the castle grounds, but that only made it more fun. Ducking behind walls, peeking through hedges, and carefully timing each shot meant I had to be part ninja, part photographer. And in the end, every moment was worth the effort.

Once Lydia said yes, the pressure lifted and the celebration began. We wandered through the spectacular grounds of Thorngrove Manor, creating a set of glamour photos that radiated pure joy. The two of them couldn’t stop grinning as they danced, skipped, and posed in the most carefree ways. Those candid, silly moments are often the ones that shine the brightest in a gallery.

Big Reveal

While we were busy with the glamour shoot, I knew their friends and family were waiting just outside the gates. They’d been instrumental in setting everything up earlier, and now it was time for them to join the celebration. I called them in, and suddenly the grounds were alive with hugs, laughter, and happy tears.

It was the perfect ending to the day. We snapped a few quick family portraits before the group packed up the setup and headed off for a celebratory dinner. Lydia and Simon were still glowing, hand in hand, surrounded by the people who loved them most. That mix of intimacy and togetherness is what makes proposals so powerful—the private moment between two people, followed by the joy of sharing the news with family and friends.

Pt Willunga Beach Engagement Shoot – Sarah & Major

Every now and then, a couple’s story takes me somewhere that feels both familiar and completely new at the same time. Sarah and Major had travelled all the way from Texas, USA, to South Australia for a friend’s wedding, and while here they wanted to capture their own milestone in a setting that felt truly unforgettable. A Pt Willunga beach engagement shoot was the perfect choice. It’s an iconic location, instantly recognisable for its weathered jetty ruins, golden sand, and dramatic cliffs. Although I’ve spent plenty of time with my camera in this part of Adelaide, every shoot takes on a different personality depending on the couple in front of the lens.

The two of them were eager to experience something that felt uniquely Australian. For me, that meant pointing them in the direction of Pt Willunga beach and the nearby Blanche Point cliffs. Both spots bring together the wild, untamed beauty of South Australia’s coastline with an atmosphere that can swing from playful to romantic depending on the light and the tide. For Sarah and Major, it became the perfect stage to showcase their personalities – adventurous, affectionate, and a little cheeky.

Pt Willunga Beach Engagement Shoot

We kicked things off at the Star of Greece carpark, a spot that overlooks the beach and offers one of the best vantage points in the area. The original idea was to stroll down along the sand, making use of the sheer cliffs and ending at the famous jetty ruins. Only, as it happens with the sea, it had other plans. The tide was unusually high, so high that it seemed to almost lick the cliff base, leaving hardly any sand to walk on. What was meant to be a casual beach wander turned into a bit of a challenge.

Adding to the unexpected mix was the algal bloom that had been affecting the coast at the time. With it came a scattering of sea foam and some unfortunate wildlife along the shoreline. It wasn’t the pristine backdrop most couples dream of, but Sarah and Major weren’t fazed. Their positive energy carried us through. Instead of focusing on what couldn’t be done, they leaned into the fun of making the most of what we had. That resilience shone through in the images, giving the photographs a sense of adventure that can’t be staged.

Once we found the sections of beach that were still accessible, Sarah and Major’s personalities came alive. They were quick to splash around, tease one another, and laugh at the quirks of the day. Engagement shoots are at their best when couples forget about the camera and simply enjoy themselves. These two did just that. Exploring the Famous Caves

As keen rock climbers, Sarah and Major weren’t about to shy away from a little challenge. Even with the waves lapping at the base of the cliffs, they were excited to explore the caves carved into the rock face. These caves are part of what makes Pt Willunga beach such a favourite among photographers. They carry echoes of history and mystery, while also offering striking natural framing for portraits.

Watching them climb around with confidence reminded me of why I love photographing couples who embrace adventure. The caves became a canvas where their closeness could shine. Tucked away from the busy shoreline, they shared moments of quiet affection balanced with playful banter. From a photographer’s perspective, those caves gave us depth, texture, and mood – a contrast to the sunny beach scenes we had just captured. Sunset at Blanche Point

After spending time at Pt Willunga beach, we drove a short distance to Blanche Point. Known for its sweeping cliffs and panoramic ocean views, it’s a place that never fails to deliver breathtaking light at sunset. The timing couldn’t have been better. As the sun began to sink, the sky turned golden, then painted itself in soft pinks and fiery oranges. It was the kind of natural spectacle that makes Adelaide’s coast world-famous for photography.

What made it even more special was that the area was deserted. Often, photographers have to share this spot with other couples or groups keen to grab the same view. On this day, it was just us. Sarah and Major embraced the moment fully, leaning into the romance of the scenery. From their laughter as they twirled on the cliff tops to the quiet embrace against the backdrop of the setting sun, every shot carried that mix of joy and intimacy that couples dream of. An Adelaide Experience to Remember

Sarah and Major came to Adelaide as guests at a friend’s wedding, but their engagement shoot at Pt Willunga beach and Blanche Point gave them memories that belonged solely to them. For me as a photographer, it was an honour to guide them through some of South Australia’s most beloved landscapes while capturing their story in a way that reflected who they are. Parkside Family Photos

There’s something truly special about being invited back to photograph a growing family. Cristina had reached out to organise another session—this time not just with the extended family, but with a sweet new addition in tow. We’d previously met up for photos at Himeji Gardens, but this time she was hoping for something a little closer to her parents’ place fin Parkside, just south of the Adelaide city center. The idea was to make it simple and easy for everyone. Ironically, they still ended up at Himeji Gardens first out of habit! A quick redirection and we were all reunited at a gorgeous little Parkside spot, ready for some relaxed and fun family photos.

The newest star of the shoot? Their adorable baby boy—snuggled up in the coziest outfit, complete with a tiny beanie that was almost too cute to handle. Even though the breeze had a bit of a bite, he was toasty and content, surrounded by doting parents and grandparents. Family shoots like these are always so heartwarming, especially when there’s a new baby involved. There’s a kind of joy and quiet excitement that bubbles just under the surface—you can feel how much this little bundle means to everyone.

Autumn Colour and Family Cuddles in Parkside Family Photos

The autumn leaves were just starting to carpet the grass, so we made the most of the golden tones. After scouting a lovely open area in Parkside, we settled in for the shoot. It’s amazing how just a few trees in the right light can feel like you’re in the middle of a magical woodland scene. The little guy wasn’t quite old enough to sit on his own yet, but with a bit of clever camera trickery (and some Photoshop wizardry later on), I made it look like he was having his own mini moment perched among the leaves.

Group photos are always a must in sessions like this—every combo imaginable! Grandparents with the baby, parents with the baby, siblings, couples, whole family together—each one capturing a slightly different connection. I like to keep the pace easy and natural, giving everyone space to be themselves. Even if not everyone loves the camera, there’s always a way to coax out the real smiles. And Cristina’s family? Just lovely. Everyone was patient, kind, and ready to go with the flow.

Grandparents, Giggles and Golden Light

We snapped a few quick shots with the grandparents before they wisely decided to head home—it was getting a bit chilly, and they’d braved enough of the fresh air to last a week. They were absolute troopers though, and you could tell how much they loved being part of these memories. The photos of them with their grandson are ones I know the family will treasure for years to come.

After that, we had the whole park to ourselves. It was that perfect time of afternoon when the light softens and glows, and the world feels calm. Cristina and her partner took turns tossing autumn leaves over their son, which had him looking around with the kind of wide-eyed wonder only a baby can manage. It’s little, candid moments like these that bring photos to life. There’s no posing, no pressure—just genuine fun.

Dog Days and Final Frames

As the session wound down, there was one last family member to include: the dog! I always love when families bring their pets along—it just adds another layer of personality to the shoot. This pup was more than happy to make a cameo. Tail wagging, curious sniffs, and a few enthusiastic zoomies later, we got a handful of sweet shots of the whole crew together.

Including pets in family photos is a beautiful way to round out the story. They’re often the ‘first baby’ before little humans come along, and they’re such a big part of the family dynamic. This one brought just the right energy to the last part of the shoot—playful but still totally in tune with the family vibe.

This little session in Parkside was calm, cosy, and full of charm. From unexpected detours to giggling under falling leaves, it had everything that makes a family shoot feel authentic. Cristina and her family were an absolute dream to work with once again, and I couldn’t be happier with how the photos turned out.

The Manor Basket Range Proposal – Kaleb & Mel

Some proposals just hit differently, and this one? An absolute fairytale moment with the kind of backdrop that gives you goosebumps. The Manor Basket Range Proposal for Kaleb and Mel was pure enchantment – complete with castle charm, a surprise twist, and a reaction that could melt stone.

Kaleb had seen one of my previous proposal shoots at Thorngrove Manor and reached out, full of ideas, excitement, and nerves (all the best ingredients for a great proposal). While Thorngrove initially had his heart, he eventually settled on The Manor Basket Range, drawn in by its regal stonework and that fountain that looks like it belongs in a romance novel.

After a few back-and-forth chats, we picked a quiet Friday afternoon – no wedding booked, no crowds (well, almost). The plan was in place: Kaleb would get down on one knee in front of the fountain, with the grand castle keep towering just behind them. The timing? Just right. The light was soft, the weather was playing nice, and the anticipation was real. I’d tucked myself out of sight like a photography ninja, waiting for the moment, heart thumping almost as hard as his probably was.

The Manor Basket Range Proposal

Now, as calm as everything looks in the final photos, there’s always a bit of chaos behind the scenes – and that’s half the fun. Just before Kaleb made his move, a handful of random folks wandered out of the manor. Turns out they were prepping for a wedding happening the next day and had zero idea they were about to photobomb a life-changing moment. One couple even took a casual loop around the fountain right before the big question – you truly can’t plan this stuff. But Kaleb kept his cool like a pro, waited for the perfect moment, and dropped to one knee just as the coast cleared.

And Mel’s reaction? Immediate joy. She said yes with the kind of happy disbelief that makes your cheeks hurt from smiling. No hesitation, just pure excitement and love. As a photographer, moments like that are the golden ticket. You only get one chance to capture it right – that mix of surprise, emotion, and sheer magic. It’s the kind of moment you replay over and over when editing, just grinning the whole time. Kaleb absolutely nailed the timing, and Mel’s sparkle wasn’t just from the ring.

Photos around the Manor Basket Range

Once the proposal nerves had settled and the ring was firmly on Mel’s finger (with a whole lot of admiring from all angles), we wandered off to explore the grounds. The Manor Basket Range has this quiet, timeless charm – and when it’s not full of wedding guests, you can really soak it in. We didn’t stop at the fountain or the front steps either – Kaleb and Mel were up for a little adventure. Across the road, there’s a lovely apple orchard space that feels like a secret garden. The soft greenery, autumn leaves crunching underfoot, and dappled light coming through the branches made it the perfect spot to wrap up the shoot. It was relaxed, romantic, and totally them – a quiet celebration between two people who clearly adore each other.

There’s something extra special about photographing another wedding photographer’s milestone. Kaleb’s trained eye made him super aware of little details, which meant we could really bounce creative ideas around. There’s something so charming about a short and sweet Adelaide Registry Wedding – and Diaz & Colin’s celebration was exactly that, filled with laughter, love, and the kind of laid-back energy that just feels right. After seeing me in action at a friend’s wedding, they reached out for their own big day. I was absolutely thrilled to capture this one. There’s always something incredibly intimate and beautiful about smaller weddings – the focus is totally on the connection, the meaning, and the moment.

This wedding had all the good vibes. Diaz and Colin weren’t after an over-the-top affair. They just wanted to officially start this next chapter surrounded by a few close friends, and it was such a joy to be part of. As a wedding photographer in Adelaide, I find these kinds of days to be refreshingly authentic – no fuss, just raw love and laughter. And with the registry office right in the heart of the city, we had the perfect mix of heritage charm and urban edges for their photos.

The Adelaide Registry Office, tucked into its spot on Wakefield Street, has this understated elegance that really works for couples wanting a no-fuss, meaningful ceremony. Diaz and Colin had a handful of friends join them – just enough to fill the space with warmth but still keep things low-key. There’s something powerful about those small ceremonies; the focus is entirely on the two of them and the promises they’re making. Every word carries weight.

They both walked into the ceremony room with this cool calm energy, but the second they locked eyes, you could feel the butterflies kicking in. Their vows were short and sweet – heartfelt, genuine, and just right. I could see their guests smiling through happy tears. There was a real softness in the air, the kind you don’t need a grand venue to feel. This little moment in the registry office held just as much emotion as any huge wedding I’ve photographed.

Photos Around the Registry Office

After the paperwork was signed and sealed, we stepped out into the Adelaide streets to kick off some relaxed couple portraits. This is always a fun part of registry weddings – no tight timelines or giant bridal parties, just the couple and me, wandering and snapping as we go. I encouraged Diaz and Colin to let their guard down a bit, and after a few cheeky prompts and silly poses, they totally got into the swing of things.

We made the most of the charming stone architecture and laneways near the registry office. There’s something about those crisp city lines mixed with giggles from newlyweds that just works so well in photos. The light bouncing off the buildings gave everything a soft glow. These two have a naturally gentle chemistry – no over-the-top poses, just little looks and genuine joy between them. The more we walked, the more they relaxed, and that’s when the magic really started to show on camera.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens Photos

Next stop: the always-beautiful Adelaide Botanic Gardens. I love whisking couples away here for a quick session – there’s just so much variety, and it’s all so dreamy.  The sunlight was slicing perfectly through the tree canopies, giving us that soft golden glow every photographer secretly dreams of.

We zipped through some of my favourite garden spots, taking full advantage of the arches, ferns, and winding paths. The whole shoot felt like an impromptu adventure – no pressure, just fun. Diaz had the biggest smile every time Colin whispered something in her ear, and he couldn’t stop looking at her like she was the only person in the world. These two didn’t need props or poses – they just needed each other. Their chemistry lit up the garden like sunshine through leaves.

The Botanic Gardens is always a bit of a love story itself. Between the glasshouse reflections, shady pockets of green, and bursts of colour from flowering plants, we created a gallery full of vibrant, romantic moments. You’d never guess from the photos that it all happened in under an hour – we really flew through it, but with so much ease. That’s the magic of a chilled-out couple who are just happy to be married and soaking it all in.
